WE'RE HERE TO share with  YOU ...

WHAT YOU DOn'T KNOW About ask us...

WHEN YOU have a question please ask us? This email will be all about that. We have questions ourselves. WE ask questions all the time. WE vocalize our thoughts, concerns, and try and picture and explain. Seeing the bigger picture, the framework, the system, the chain, the tiers, the options available to us as a small business boutique fine spirits store fighting for our lives to stay here, to be relevant to you, to keep you happy and coming back for more.

I KNOW I HAVE been very assertive and insistent, persistent, please do not take it wrong, my intentions are only to try and share and open the world to you, so that you know what your options are so that you may better decide what fits the specific mood or circumstance, not only for you but for those ithers gathering around you.

IT'S A BIT DAUNTING, we all know this. However, we want it to be the best that it possibly can for you. That is our aim.

THIS WEEK WILL BE about sharing loval spirits with you from ales, beers, ciders, liquors, liqueurs, and wines. We have some old favoroites like the ...

1) Single Malt Whisky non-chill-filtered Rappahannouk pot-stilled from WASMUND'S, $39.99 ( aged in Cherry barrels )  that we have been selling here ever since Rick Wasmund's partner Sean showed it to us in 2007 I believe? We were one of the very first here in Washington D.C. to sell it, and we later added ...

2) the COPPER FOX Rye whisky, $44.99 when it became available. Both Rick and Sean have been here tasting at least two times each. It has been fun to work with Rick and Sean and to watch them first grow the rye and the grains used to make their spirits, to hear them tell their stories here to us and to our customers. This has been a great partnership since the very start. Thanks Rick and Sean. We have both of these here now in time for the holiday season, the cold and the family gatherings.

CHECK OUT the pictures and the writing, stories posted on both WASMUND'S and on COPPER FOX at : chatwine.blogspot.com. Cheers.

HAVE YOU TRIED yet the DEVIL'S BACKBONE Brewing Company Vienna Lager , or their IPA? They have been amazingly successful, as has the WASMUND'S and the COPPER CREEK, both gaining and audience and a fan base of followers that support and recommend, just like us, these fine local Virginia products! The 6-packs are On Special for $9.99 for the 12-ounce bottles, with 5.2% alcohol by volume, and they are flavorful, distinct, real tastes that will hold their own as this wind and sometimes biting cold sweep through our neighborhoods , hoses, apartments and streets : brrrrrrrrr, stay warm and happy, enjoy DEVIL'S BACKBONE Brewing Company ales and lagers!

I REMEMBER when the DEVIL'S BACKBONE was introduced here and we did our first successful tasting. People bought and were impressed. I included the two here in a private wine-tasting that I did as the husband preferred beer while his wife wanted to have a win-tasting. I wanted everyone to be happy. They were, too. The DEVIL'S BACKBONE ale and lager spoke to the fifteen or so guests gathered around the large  rectangular table. I had to pour more, they wanted more, even after all the excellent local wine I had poured, it was a great local celebration way back when!

I JUST SPOKE to owner Rob Miller last Thursday or Friday here of the CIDERWORKS DLC in Jefferson, Maryland, he will come and pour some of his excellent sparkling apple ciders, made from his own orchard apples that he grows on his property there, no extracts, nothing added from other areas , just pure apple juice hard cider, showcasing the various apples he grows which are more than thirty types! This will be fun.

FROM DLC CIDERWORKS we have  now in stock ...

1) The Jefferson Hard Cider, $18.99 for a 750ml bottle  with 7.5% alcohol by volume, as well as the Kingston Black Hard Cider, $28.99, with 7.5% alcohol by volume, both ar distinct, flavorful, better when you combine them with some food. They have so much flavor and taste that the food helps to flesh them out, and they, in turn help to brighten and freshen the flavors in the foods themselves : a grand ' win-win ' situation for all! Come taste with Ron Miller, discover great and distinct and flavorful local apple ciders made close by in Jefferson, Maryland!

SPEAKING OF WHICH, our ' Big-Theme Sparkling Champagne Bubbly ' Tasting is coming up on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015, so : MARK your calendars! It will be from 5:30-8:30PM, and it is FREE! I understand many stores are no charging for these. I am trying to avoid that. The complaint is that people come to taste and do not support the event by even buying one bottle. PLEASE BUY a bottle and show your support for this. I do not want to have to start charging.

SO : THIS YEAR our annual, most-popular Bubbly, Sparkling, Champagne Tasting is Free on Wed. Dec. 2nd, 2015 from 5:30-8:30PM. JOIN US, no charge.

ALSO LOCAL : we have the handcrafted , small batch MT. DEFIANCE dark rum from Middleburg, Virginia, $39.99 a 750ml bottle, with 40% alcohol by volume, fiery, flame-fresh and good earth and spice, very tasty and best with some food or later at night after the meal. It is a great way to bring both the day and the night to a beautiful, peaceful, impactful close. Aaaaaaahhhhhh yes!

I WAS INTRODUCED to MT. DEFIANCE by our great neighbors Kate, Alex and Gregory, they had visited the distillery and bought some and wer both impressed and quite proud, and offered me a taste when we visited one weekend several months ago. And now Estebe of Tradewinds Specialty Imports is here offering it to us all. An almost full-circle, we are working on our part.

TOMORROW, we have Lucinda Williams here to pour the grand wines of GABRIELE RAUSSE from his own winery GABRIELE RAUSSE Winery  in Charlottesville, Virginia, 22902. Gabriele started here all the way back in April 1976 I believe? He was one of the very first, perhaps the second as the FARFELU Winery did exist at the time, and students from UVA brought him some to taste.

GABRIELE worked with the Zonin family of Italy way back then and they had to start the business as a wine grape nursery and not vineyards, that was mandated then by the Virginia local government. I do not think the first wines made from the grapes they grew at the nursery were available till 1979?

GABRIELE HAS TASTED here now three or four times and I love his wines, they are pure expressions of what Virginia can do, mostly in stainless-steel, not oaked, using only Virginia grapes and not grapes added in purchased from New York or California, or other regions like Washington State. Pure Virginia grapes to enjoy that are bright, fresh, lively, and versatile with almost any meal or completely on their own.

JOIN US TOMORROW,Wednesday, November 11th, 2015 with Lucinda Williams here from 5-8PM and taste :

1) 2013 Pinot Grigio, $20.99, with 12% alcohol by volume. See what you think?

2) NV Cabernet Sauvignon , $19.99 with 13% alcohol by volume, a favorite of mine for years.

3) 2013 Nebbiolo , $21.49 with 13% alcohol by volume which, I believe sees a minimal time in older oak barrels, perhaps 3 months? I will check?

THEY ARE all three delights, balanced, and great suggestions to enjoy now during these days and nights as the temperatures drop and the leaves continue to drop and the wind howls longer, louder and with more cold clout!

AND AS A TREAT Lucinda will also taste Claude Thibaut's Virginia THIBAUT JANISSON Xtra Brut NV, sparkling wine made in very limited quantities, $36.49 a 750ml bottle with 12.5% alcohol by volume. I am looking forward to trying it having never sampled it yet. It will be a treat for me as well as for you all.

LOCAL WINE We Highly Recommend :

     1) Virginia THIBAUT-JANISSON Blanc De Chardonnay half bottles ( 375ml bottles , $21.99, with 12.5% alcohol by volume ) that we have sold and tasted and represented here with Claude and Pamela since they started selling in Washington D.C. many glorious moons ago.

     2) ' Mom ' , dedicated to all mothers, n off-dry white blend of Traminette grapes and others, from the NARMADA Winery, a 2011, $20.99, 13.6 alcohol by volume, so floral and bright and lush and full on the palate, a great crowd-pleaser!

     3) Rkatsiteli indigenous grape variety , dry , flavorful grape, from Georgia originally I believe? This one comes from Mark Fedor of NORTH GATE Vineyard in Loudoun County, VA. $20.99, with 13% alcohol by volume, a fine food wine, fine with turkey and goose and chicken, with smoked meats and fish, like smoked trout!

     4) 2013 Sauvignon Blanc from BIG CORK Vineyards, Maryland, $21.99, Frederick, 13.8% alcohol by volume, ... very dry, very flavorful, a great food treat from Dave Collins that used to make the wines at BREAUX Vineyards in Virginia.

     5) 2013 Chardonnay from the BIG CORK Vineyards, Maryland, On Special for $17.99, slightly oaked, opulent, a bit more in the popular West Coast style.

     6) ' R ' Cabernet Franc 2013 from RAPPAHANNOCK Cellars , $32.99, 13.6% alcohol by volume,  a tasty, more body, more pith and dollops of spice evenly spaced, ah yes!

     7) Virginia ' Midnight ' Semi-Dry Chambourcin 2011, $19.99 a 750ml bottle with 13.1% alcohol by volume, is ripe and full and delectable to sip all by itself.

     8) The Melange 2013 dry red blend for PARADISE SPRINGS in Clifton, VA, $32.99, is a real treat, and we will be on the next vintage when we order again.

     9) 2013 Viognier from the BREAUX Vineyard , $28.99, is pretty electrifying and resilient and such an entertainer, too : lovely!

    10) 2013 Chambercin dry red from FABBIOLI CELLARS in Loudoun County , $18.99, with 12% alcohol by volume continues to impress me as the vines age and the wine becomes more voluptuos and lush and fruit-forward, so pleasing to enjoy with or without a meal, chill 30 minutes and enjoy fully!

    11) 2012 Cabernet Franc from FABBIOLI CELLARS , $20.99, with 12.5% alcohol by volume is grittier, earthier, more grip and grist and body, and I liked it a whole lot when Doug tasted two past weekend's ago.

    12) 2013 Meritage dry red Bordeaux blend from NORTH GATE Vineyard, $27.99, with 13.6% alcohol by volume, I loved how immediate and bright and round and polished this taste was, exciting, balanced, a real treat from Mark Fedor in Loudoun County, VA. He poured this alongside Doug Fabbioli a couple of weekend's ago.
