I'M TRYING TO SOUND NEW HIP AND ORIGINAL and intriguing here so that you wonder what I am saying and open this email! You may be surprised from now on as perhaps I have gotten into too much of a sure-thing and you already know what that is and so don't feel it necessary to check what I spend the better part of a Tuesday writing here for hopefully your benefit.
I WROTE the above back on August 20th, 2009! It is fun to see what has changed since then, some things have stayed the same, too.
I AM SORRY and yet personally happy - selfish of me, I know - when some of you read last week's store email and thought you were coming to try 27 Greek wines. I am sorry for the confusion, but I was delighted to see you all anyway. I had just returened from my vacation the day before and to see so many of you here was a treat for me. You all looked so good, like summer was taking good care of you. Some of you did have some tough stories to share with me, too - and I sympathize, really I do.
HOPEFULLY many of you saw the total eclipse of the sun yesterday by the moon? It sure was a spectacle, and I was off and didi my best to make the most of it, succedding some. Go to our Facebook page at : Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits and see the pics I just put up, they will make you laugh, as more than just us humans caught the total eclipse bug!
I ENJOYED the process, the moment, knowing that on some level many of us were taking some time to catch it and be marvelled and pleased, awed and amzed! It was quite something else.
BUT : let me focus on our many specials now and pick up here later after getting your attention with some important spirits we have to cajole and entertain, soothe, please and tease your spirits!
IN BEER from Santos Rivera we have :
     1) Cherry Picker Farmhouse ale aged in oak barrels with cherries from the ALMANAC BEER Company, brewed in northern California, ( Farm To Barrel ) with Brett, On Special for $10.99 with 6.8% alcohol by volume. Brett is something that also occurs in wine, and some people like it, and can enjoy it, others cannot. It is not for everybody. Try it on for size, fit and feel : taste where your palate is on this? Cheers.
     2) Sunlight Cream Ale celebrates American brewing tradition by balancing smooth malt complexity with a crisp, clean finish. Made by SUN KING Brewery, a fresh local beer from Indianapolis, Indinia, a 4-pack of 16 Fl. Oz cans, On Special for $15.99 , ( a pint in every can ) - " Sun King remains dedicated to fresh ' local ' beer through exclusively Indiana-based distribution and continued growth, with a commitment to community development throughout the state. " We like that, really we do. Cheers.
     3) 1906 Reserva Especial , a 6-pack of 33cl bottles with 6.5% alcohol by volume, On Special for $11.99, : " 1906 es sinonimo de tradicion y de cuidado los detalles. Selecionamos las mejores materias primas y elaboramos nuestras recetas anadiendo el ingrediente mas importante : la pasion. Solo asi conseguimos que cada 1906 tenga una personalidad unica. 1906 es nuestra interpretacion mas personal. " Attention to every detail, using the finest ingredients, using original old recipe being careul, and ensuring the finest distinct unique product possible, that is their goal, and they succeed. Try this soon.

     1) ' Original ' Calvados Pays D'Auge fruite et delicat - fruity and delicate - from LECOMPTE, Normandy, France, $25.99 a 375ml bottle, with 40% alcohol by volume, : I like this Original for the warm moths because it is milder, softerm lighter, less intense, easier to sip and enjoy with both heat and humidity, and this is a smaller size bottle, and easier to transport and to share, camping, with friends and family : apple brandy at it's very purest, brightest, best!
     2) PUR LIKOR three-sampler-bottle-packs back by popular demand. I personally love this. Owner Kiki Braverman from Germany brought these organic liqueurs to our attention more than two years ago, and this sampler pack of three is a great way to drink the best quality and to have some real variety as well. It includes a bottle !) blossom of elderflower with really dark deep color with 22% alcohol by volume, and ... 2) the spice blood orange liqueur, and a bottle of ... 3) williams pear liqueur, too, the last two with 25% alcohol by volume, all in a nice gift-pack of 100ml bottles, On Special for $27.99. A great product, a great gift idea, a win-win for everyone!
     3) Beach Plum Gin liqueur from GREENHOOK GINSMITHS, small-batch distilled, with 30% alcohol by volume, $51.99, thus is a great summer treat to enjoy now on vacation.: " created with a rare, finicky fruit with a prized piquant flavor recipe creates a distinctive liqueur with a lovely color. Dare I say that this is Slivovitz and gin combined in a refreshing unique way?!?
     4) Rye Small Batch 100% Rye whisky from WILLIAM WOLF, $30.99 a bottle, bottle # 3781, with 46% alcohol by volume, a product of Holland, and it is recommended to serve over ice, refreshing, forward and bright in flavors, too!

TWO out of THREE From FERNET BRANCA :

     1) Branca Menta Fratelli Branca Distillerie, On Soecial for $30.99, mint and the Fernet Branc here combined. You need to find something to add to this like they add Coca Cola to the regular Fernet Branca. Think about the flavors of mint, crushed ice would be great for example, and maybe some soda water or even some tonic?! Be a mixologist, let me know what you try and like. Cheers!

     2) Fernet Amaro Extra Fine liqueur , On Special for $24.99 a bottle. This is how you settle your body after you enjoy whatever earlier in the day and evening. This makes it easier for you to sleep well and comfortable after a day and night of enjoyment! Clever, drink the Branca Menta first then the Amaro! Cheers! With 40% alcohol by volume.

WINE From Chris & Tony :
          ONE From France :
     1) A dry white blend from the DOMAINE VETRICCIE, on the Ile de Beaute , $9.99, a dry and tasty, distinct blend of 50% Vermentino and 50% Chardonnay, from France, this is a great wine to sip indoors or outside when you grill or have a plate of assorted appetizers, with salads, and so much more!
          ONE From Germany :
     2) 2015 Muller-Thurgau Halbtrocken white from Germany's Rheinhessen, region, a liter bottle at $15.99, a graet refresher, off-dry, what a treat when you want some more fruit in your mouth and less acidity or heaviness. This is great to sip all by itself, also great when you use a lot of butter in your recipes, a treat. More wine here as the bottle is as liter, and not a 750ml bottle!
          ONE From Australia :
     3) Shiraz 2014 from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, made by SIDEWOOD, $16.49 a bottle,  : " Handpicked from individually selected rows on our 300 acre estate. This cool climate wine was carefully crafted in the winery, and is the result of an extraordinary vintage. Complex and elegant, rich ruby red in clor, with brooding aromas of black and red fruit., enhanced by tantalizing notes of cassis and nutmeg derived from 15 months in French oak barriques. ... " With 14.5% alcohol by volume, chill 30-40 minutes and enjoy the energy, the power, the force and concentration of firm deep flavors! Yes.
         ONE From Virginia :
     4) Viognier 2015 from Charlotte County, VA. from Gabriele Rausse and his son made at the GABRIELE RAUSSE Winery, $18.99. This is great when you want to drink a wine made from all the grapes grown in Virginia, by the grandfather of Virginia wines ( going back to 1976 ,the principal gardener at Monticello for years now ), - and you want the purety and the freshness, the brightness that you can and should always get! The best yes, such amazing quality, and a value as well. Highly recommended.
ONE From New York State :
     5) 2014 Dry Red Blend, $19.99 a bottle,  of 55% Merlot, 40% Corot Noir, and 5% Malbec: produced and bottled by OENOLOGY, calles SHINDIG, this is lively, bright, edgy, refreshing, with bing cherry tartness, and weight from the Corot grape, chill 40 minutes and enjoy with a meal of smoked foods, anything off the grill, what a great and refreshing, distinct wine this is! Yes.
ONE More Wine  Wine From France :
       6) ' Roche Gravit ' 2015 100% Gamay, from the town of JUlienas, made by ALBERT BICHOT, this is  not a beefier ( like the Fleurie we have from Manoir du Carra, $19.99  - not a beefier version, more muscle, power, tannins and acidity than some Cru Beaujolais wines, and this needs a meal as a result. Chill ), and so this 2015 On Special at $19.99 is softer, rounder, more gentle and silky, rounder, kinder for this heat and humidity when you want to sip your red. Medium-to-lighter-bodied, chill 40 minutes and enjoy with or without food. Cheers.
          TWO Sparkling Wines :
       ONE From Armenia -
     7) Origins methode traditionelle Brut, On Special for $23.99 a bottle, with 12.5% alcohol by volume, from Yerevan, made from the indigenous grapes of Khatoun 60%, and with the Voskehat 40%, made in the Vayots Dzor region, I like the polish, the freshness, the brightness, the pure flavorful tastes that are here. It is really quite amazing, and perfect for this heat and humidty. It is a special treat, buy it tomorrow here and get 20% off this bottle price. Yes!!! Highly recommended.
     8) 4478 Methode traditionell Nobleeffervescence from the Val D'Oasta northwestern Italy, made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, On Special for $27.99, I love this with asian meals, middle eastern, tex mex and Mexican foods, too : great when there is any jalepeno or cilantro included in the meal!      LIFE IS GRAND THOUGH THE WHEELS ARE TURNING so slowly with this heat and humidity now. It's my first day back at work after having been gone 2 weeks and I really do feel refreshed and like a million dollars. I got up quickly this morning and walked on our exercise treadmill and really whipped up quite a  salty drippy sweat that felt great as I thought of what good it was doing for me. I had listened to Igor Stravinsky's " The Rites Of Spring " as I walked. I actually have an old record on the LONDON LABEL ( it cost me $1.50 I believe ) that I purchased way back when at one of the State Department Book and Record Sales.
I WROTE THE ABOVE back on August 17th, 2009! Imagine that?!?

BACK FROM VACATION, and from my drive I could tell that many of you are still off on vacation as my ride was swift with many fewer cars on the road.
WHERE ARE YOU?!? Where is your vacation now? Tell us about it, share some of your pictures with us. I immediately have this posted on our Facebook page at : ClevelenadParkWine&Spirits so go there, and add your photos there if you like sharing pics and any other comments of what you like and enjoy best wherever you are?
WE WERE BOTH on a week Stay-At-Home, as well as a weel of VayKay away. We were due to go to Hatteras Outer Banks, North Carolina the first week of August, were forced to stay at home and rearrange things quick so we could be at Duck the second week. Upsetting but we turned things around and had both a great stay-at-home, and get-away vacation! We were fortunate and dealing with a situation that was unsure at best as we knew the whole Hatteras Island was vacuated the day we were supposed to be up and ready and in the car at 6a.m.
IT WAS cooler and cloudier at the beach and that was a first for us. Usually it is hotter than blazes! It was great, too for once to be on the Sound side of the Outer Banks, to see so many pelicans, and to see the glorious sunsets all 360 degrees : no mattter where we looked it was stunning! And we saw so many pelicans flying around mostly in small groups of under five at a time, many diving down past the swimmers that could walk way out far on the sand bars, and the pelicans would dive and then disappear from our sight because of the rolling layers of studied, sure, turbulent a bit waves.
THE COMPANY, the food, the wine, the seagulls and the many dogs and their people , the children fearless in many cases, the snad castles, digging, the lonely lifeguard of Plover, the people, all good - all relaxed, all calming and a special treat.
WE MET a couple that had driven, John and Michele, from Minessota with their two teanagers and their red lab Rhett named after Rhett Butler, that carried with him a shiny bright yellow tennis ball in his jaws. All he wanted was for us to throw it in the oceon so that he could retrieve it and bring it back, and he was a master at retrieval!
CHEERS, THANKS for everything, you all are the very best! Must send this now, everything else will have to wait.
JUST TRIED some fine wines with family member Nico of his family's VIAMONTE Wines of Argentina, with Nico and his brother Martin, they are producing really polished, fine, beautiful grape wine expressions in Argentina like the 2015 Bonarda Montevia that blew me away - absolutely loved it! Cheers!   TONY

CALL US : 202-363-4265 ; We'll deliver now Though It's Beautiful Today & WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU. TIME for some dry rose & bubbly, mixed drinks, some refreshing brews, some exciting apple & pear ciders : so many possibilities now

ABOVE IS WHAT I WROTE back in May 14th, 2013 and it rings true today for the most part, pretty amazing!
MEMORIAL DAY Weekend is coming up with Memorial Day on Monday May 29th, 2017. I have already been hearing about this through my daughter that is a teacher. It is the day that the neighborhood pools open and everyone can finally get in the water, cold as it may be , and often is. Brrrrr many would say. I would splash around and warm up and be happy as a clam!
THE SUNSHINE is finally starting to remain here with us it seems, more than the rain! This is the third or fourth day and it sure does feel special.
HOPE EVERYONE thanked their super teachers last week, and enjoyed Mother's Day this past Sunday! We owe our success , happiness and well-being in large part to all of you. Thanks from all of us from the bottom of our hearts!
As usual now I arrive here and feel that the week will be chock-full of activities and specials and important people and beers, ciders, liquors and spirits and wines to share with you all, and there is.
I JUST HAD SOMEONE  from the OLNEY Winery in Maryland come and see us and that was fun. She will return again tomorrow and taste with Chris and me in the mid afternoon, her many wines with fruit infusions, as well as some of her wines, too. It will be interesting to see what OLNEY Winery offers, they say that they are already in 600 stores in Maryland. Wow, that is impressive, especially as these wines that are fruit-infused with Blackberries, Watermellom, Peach, Black Cherry, Green Apple, Cranberry, Black Cherry Bomb ( this one with a higher alcohol level of almost 15% I believe she said? ), and more. Have any of you had these yet? Are you interested in any of these flavors, let us know? Thanks.
I JUST HEARD an ad fro a chain grocery store on the radio. It made me think that it was clever the ad, the lady spoke well, prsented a good picture. My comment to this is that they are many things to many people, a great wine selection, too she claimed. I know someone that works for them that has shopped here for years and that gentleman told me that the wine selection is really hit-or-miss : that some bottles are really fine, others are a real bust.
FURTHER, this is what we offer, not groceries and so many other categories : SIMPLY beer, cider, liqueur, liquor, other spirits and wine. Nothing more : and we are here to walk you through these selections and advise you, face-to-face, these are our specialties, and we are well-versed in them :
     - Jagir for liquor,
     - Santos for beer and ciders and spirits
     - Chris for beer, cider, liqueurs, liquors, wine and more
     - Tony ( me ) for cider , liqueurs, liquor, wine and more. Beer is not my specialty, I know some, am always learning more.
     - We all are always learning more : our doors are open to all new products, experiences, and more : as you all are interested in all of the , both ' old and new ' experiences! We have to be there to work with you on better knowing, appreciating and sharing all these.

THE SUNSHINE is starting to break through again and perhaps the wind / breeze is less chilling, too?!? Let's hope so as we try and all find our balance and rhythm in all this volatile weather recently. What can we hope for/ what can we expect?
WELL HERE YOU MAY all expect that we have a great changing assortment of beer bitters, cider, digestives liquor , liqueur,  waters , wines , with an occasional sprinkling of Bailey Kasten's FABulous local chocolates ( Bailey and Saif live here in D.C. and work in Old Towne Alexandria, Virginia making these fine chocolates and caramel's - $9.99 and $14.99 a box ), Bill Sander's extra virgin California olive oil (  $18.99 a 500ml bottle, made from 3 Spanish olives - Bill used to live here in Cleveland Park as well ) and James' Teavine organic sparkling Missouri ( 2 grapes grown there : the Traminette and the Riesling ) mixed with honey and green tea ( James is also a local Cleveland Park boy-man made good like Bill ).
WE SUPPORT LOCAL, WE SUPPORT small businesses : we stand and work together here and it works. For those of you that have come to know us you know this is how we work. We have nothing against the bigger enterprises, but being small we work more closely with the smaller companies and keep each other gainfully employed in these very difficult times when the large companies have their lawyers that announce in public meetings here that they are just trying to be more for their customers. WELL, aren't we all?!? And when did we stop respecting the boundaries of each of our business ventures and not spill into the business of everyone else?!?
I KNOW, I KNOW, I should not be saying or writing this, but as my horoscope said today : " You are not trying to be a rebel but you cannot help but notice the injustice around you " : I paraphrase, of course. But this did strike a big chord with me earlier this morning before coming to work. Cheers.
SAM ANDERSEN Just Stopped By With Owner Franz Leth of WEINGUT LETH in Wagram, Austria to taste quickly 8 wines : three of which we carry. Here are my notes : 1) Gruner Veltliner Reserve Steinagrund 2011,  $17.99 ( Rich yet very contained, supple on the palate and yet distinct and bright! ),  2) Roter Veltliner Reserve Hofweingarten 2011, $20.99 ( thicker, meatier, broader and a bit more laid-back and yet amazingly pleasing to hold on my tongue a few seconds longer and savor the aroma and the taste ),  3) Roter Scheiben 2011, $36.99 ( lighter, brighter, more of a fine ballet dancer that has practiced and practiced so that every step, every pause, every glance and splash makes an amazingly bright, distinct and memorable impression!, $36.99,  4)  Riesling Reserve Felser Weinberg 2011, $20.99 ( light and airy and bright and breezy and fresh and perfect for when it gets warmer and more humid : a complete wine that will completely blossom with the hot weather still to come, and otherwise with a meal ), 5) Roter Veltliner Reserve Scheiben 1990 Library Release , $89.99 ( wow, the world stops here to take note, appreciate and to wonder and marvel that there could be such fullness of flavors, such brightness, such gaiety and warmth and personality still after to many years being held captive in this bottle! ), 6) Gruner Veltliner Reserve Brunnthal 1985, $107.99 ( to have such freshness and vim and vigor and character that has it's scars and it's chiseled cheeks and sculpted clay features, like sculpting a grape and giving it a 3-D dimension that is so captivating, and that draws everyone into it's web/sphere of influence - amazing - all the flaws and all the perfections wrapped up nicely here as one - bravo! ),  7)  Pinot Noir red 2010, $43.99 ( who could know it could have so much flavor and personality, weight, a dusty-forest-floor dryness of rolling around on the ground, being mixed into the blend with the other grapes : a distinct, really nice medium-bodied dry red to enjoy with a meal ),  8) Baluer Zweigelt Reserve " Gigama " 2008, $76.99, ( a 100% Zweigelt dry red that is made only every other year or when merited that takes the Zweigelt to a place that I have never been before : rich, complex, aged and flavorful and layered and that digs deep into the soul and the heart that is Zweigelt, and not what we just taste on the surface and that is only really just skin-deep. This 2008 penetrates, it's like a biodynamic wine that goes way down into the the guts and the soul of this famous Austrian indigenous red grape. Cheers. What a wonderful tasting. Franz has been here once before several years ago. He tells me to be sure and give credit to his son, also named Franz that makes the wines today. Prost Franz, father and son and grandfather, too!

     4) Barolo Chinato " Cocchi " , Casa Fondata Nel 1891 ( $62.99 a liter bottle, old recipe from Giulio Cocchi, 16.5% alcohol by volume,  and also : ) : pair it after dinner with dark chocolate, also great with the Vin Brule popular in Italy's Piemonte region in the colder months, or on a colder evening here after the sun goes down and there's a chill in the air. It's a real treat. Eric Platt just said how much he liked it. He just brought us the two owners : Alice and Hermann Seifield.      DO NOT GET ME Wrong - we have always supported Australian wines, but the high Aussie dollar against ours, and the need for distributors to bring in 600 ot 14 hundred cases at a time of the wines made it very hard and prohibitive to do so, and so they have suffered here in the United States now for almost ten years now. SAD.
We have had important-from-the-start importers like Robert Whale close his operation. A sad moment indeed, as way back when he was one of the very first ever to bring Aussie wines to us, and in 1986 I believe there were six hundred cases of Aussie wines improted, total, for the entire United States? It was a small sum indeed, even if it was larger than that. Then Aussie wines exploded here and Robert Whale with others led the way. Thanks Robert.
SO : here we are and it is time to have more and to show are renewed support for these fine wines that are slowly making their way back and , once again, finding a happy home on our shelves.
HERE IS WHAT Chris and I have found to offer you all now:
          TWO Whites :
     1) Dry Riesling 2016 from Eden Vale and made by PEWSEY VALE, $18.99 a bottle, , an individula Vineyard selection, this is lean, bright-mean-honest-grit-grip-steel-strict-supple-as-it-warms tasting dry Riesling, what a great wine to sip now and enjoy thoroughly with many a meal in this heat wave coming to us soon!
     2) Chardonnay Filius 2015, from Australia's Margaret River, the VASSE FELIX dry Chardonnay is another gem, this one on Austrailia's western coast south of Perthe. $27.49 gets you a rich and layered mouth-feel that is really nice just to sip alone, or have some Chicken Cordon-Bleu or lobster dipped in melted pure butter and fly and sing and dance, too!
THREE Syrah- Shiraz Dry Reds :
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE between a Shiraz and a Syrah : nothing but the spelling and the pronounciation, nothing at all! They are one-and-the-same.
     1) Shiraz ' The Ripper ' Geographe Western Australia, from owner Michael Hope's HOPE ESTATE Family Vineyards, a 2013, $20.99 a bottle, this Shiraz has some really generous ripe and fruit-forward EDGY flavor, a touch more steely, a touch more accented spice and girth, great when you grill or have foods more marinated and stronger-tasting. Chill 30-40 minutes and ' let it rip! '
     2)  Shiraz 2013 from Australia's Barossa Valley which is inland from the town of Adelaide in southern Australia. This is from the SCHILD Estate, 21.49, with lovely polish and elegance, fruit-forward balance and generous yet tempered excitement for the tongue, lovely. Great to sip, like to chill 30-40 minutes to wake the flavors up, energize them, and to make them dance and sing, croon on our palate, yes!
     3) Syrah from ' The Right REVEREND ', $24.49 a bottle, from Mount Barker, a 2014, from West Australia sub-regional range, from : " our most reverend vineyards " says Nick the owner/ president of VINACEOUS Wines. Many of you have met and tasted with Nick here over the years from his WEST CAPE HOWE wines of Denmark, western Australia, to now with the Right REVEREND! We tasted this, too here recently when we featured and tasted these with you all for our Big-Theme Aussie wine tasting, sold a lot, too. This is a fine food wine, it has many layers of flavor, needs food to flesh it out some, as in reality the wines are loaded with ' spit and polish ' honest flavors!
TWO Fine Aussi Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Reds :
     1) ' Avalon Tree ' Cabernet Fleurieu Penninsula, Australia, a Single Site from ZONTE'S FOOTSTEPS , On Special for $19.99 a bottle, this Cabernet is another fine food red, it has plenty to offer, a bit of an edge, a little more spice and grist and edge, and the food will flesh that out brilliantly. Would have been lovely with the steaks I grilled outside last night, mmmm, or some of our cheese we enjoyed earlier.
     2) Kangarilla Road 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia's McLaren Vale, On Special for $21.99 a bottle, there is real polish, brightness, fruit-forward silk and a lovely quality that makes this pretty irrestistable to sip all by itslef or enjoy with many a meal : I gave it top scores, five hugs, five WOWS, my highest praise almost : try and say ' Wow! ' five times straight, sip some, then try again, sip some more and try saying it once again : ALL fun!
          THREE Warm-Weather Whites :
TWO VINHO VERDE'S with 9% alcohol by volume ...
     1) IT IS Vinho Verde time, almost, now, the weather just keeps flip-floppinh on us, and so we have FOUR back in stock ( 1) GATAO Vinho Verde, $9.99, 9% alcohol by volume _|: usually the most crisp, lean, tart and tangy with a splash of spark spark arc sparkle, too! ...
2) SANTOLA Vinho Verde , also with 9% alcohol by volume, and a touch of sparkle, a bit rounder, fuller, more gentl taste here, $8.99 ...
NEWS that I hear about this area concerns the 7-11 that still has not opened, they applied for the wrong lease I hear and so that has been delayed.
          TWO Vinho Verde's with 10.5%, 11.5% alcohol
     1) Superior Vinho Verde 2015 from CURVOS, On Special for $9.99 a bottle,  with 11.5% alcohol by volume, more body, more weight and flavor, , a blend of the indigenous grapes used like Luoreiro 75%, 15% Trajadura and 10% Arinto : lovely, more levels of taste and flavor, great for this heat, enjoy at night!
     2) Branco Meio Seco Vinho Verde from ENCOSTAS DO LIMA, $9.99, the fruitiest, with the most weight, with 10.5% alcohol by volume, a touch of sparkle, too, this is the most unique Vinho Verde that I have ever tasted, and aquired tatse, great when you need a low alcohol white for when it is sweltering outside and you want it to complement your meal and you still want a glass or two of white wine! Cheers!
TWO ' Ridiculous Value ' White Wines
     1) ' Cote de DANUBE ' Viognier dry white from CHATEAU BURGOZONE, On Special for $9.99 a bottle, ( regularly $15.00 a bottle, or more ), a really dry and refreshing Viognier, flavor, taste, it has it all, a treat. We finished the sample bottle left to us at home on Sunday afternoon celebrating the graduation from college of our neighbor James with Katarina, Byron and Carol, my wife and me included, and it was really good, and it had been open since Wednesday I believe? WE have just over a case so get some now. Five more cases are supposed to be coming to us soon, but you never know? Get some while you can - really special, and a ridiculous price.
     2) ' Quantum ' 2015 Chardonnay from DOMAINE BUYAR in Bulgaria, On Special for $10.99 a bottle, ( regularly over $20 a bottle ), this has some FABulous citrus and mineral taste, not heavy yet rich, bright, lively, engaging, a treat to enjoy now, a real treat, I really liked it a whole lot! Come get some while you can, this is excellent dry Chardonnay, with 12.5% alcohol by vlume, classic, balanced, distinct, try some! It will cut through the humidity nicely.
REMEMBER it is Teacher's Appreciation week, we started last week, and continue this week, too!

Georgian Quevri Saperavi red  and Rhatsiteli white , too

Camille Edange of Les Grands Chais de France tastes :

     1) ' La Chapelle ' 2015 Chardonnay-Viognier rich, complex, multi-layered delicious dry wite, DOMAINE DE THOLOMIES, slow to open, do not rush it, do not overchill it either, a wonderful wine, $16.49 a bottle!
     2) ' La Chapelle ' dry red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Pays D'Oc, too, Vin Bio, $16.49 : some real flavor and structure and character - great with a meal, fine balance!
          ALSO :
Georgian winemaker, export manager, 3rd generation, Gogi Dakishvili, making and aging wine in the Quevri ceramic large jars - selles that are buried in the ground. Gogi has been assisting the younger Georgian winemakers in Georgia now for two decades, and it will be great to have him here with Noel Brockett of the Georgian House of Greater Washington LLC, with Mamuka Tsereteli, too ... pouring four wines :
          TWO Whites :
     1) ' Amber Dry ' 2015 dry white indigenous blend of the Rkatsoteli 50%, and the Mtsvane 50%, $15.49 a bottle, made in the Quevri  dry and pleasing, a delightful palate-cleaner-palate-awakener to enjoy with a meal from DILAO,   AND :
     2) Rkatsiteli from ORGO from Kakheti, $26.49 , an orange wine made in the Quevri vessels in ceramic, layered, multi-dimensional, the original ' orange wines ' that have now been copied and made all over the world, and rightly-so as these are quite compelling, quite intriguing wines, come taste and see for yourselves.
          TWO Reds :
     1) ' Red Dry ' 2015 Saperavi red from DILAO, $15.49 a bottle, , with 13% alcohol , also made in Quevri , a softer, brighter, more approachable red to enjoy almost anytime, anywhere. I like to chill it 40 minutes and have it warm to the perfect temperature for all of us, we decide that. Enjoy with some grilled foods, meats and vegetables.
     2) Saperavi 2014 dry red made from old vineayrds ( does that mean old vines, too Noel? ), with 12.5% alcohol by volume, $26.49, these wines are really quite pleasing, very elegant, polished and refined, like them quite a bit! Cheers, look forward to meeting you Gogi.
This will be a great wine-tasting with fine wines of France and of Georgia!

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, do not forget to thank your teachers, we started this last week : and do not forget that it is Mother's Day this Sunday. WE have plenty of gifts to offer you all for both occasions. TONY 4/9/2017
THERE IS TALK that the block with Petco will become an office or apartment building , and if, so, we certainly hope that the retail stores below will be kept.
CUSTOMERS for the last week have informed me that they have received notices that WEYGANDT'S Wines is closing it's location here. Though never close to them ( we used to have Peter Weygandt himself come here and propose his wines for us to buy, many that we did in fact and sell well - along with the wines of many fine importers, as there are many ), and we wish them well as they are a part of the community as we are. Was it the high rents there that have them closing shop there?
LOTS OF SPECULATION continues to circle with the old Four P'S Irish Pub location across the street, with talk of retail and an open market coming there soon on the weekends? All conversation, very little transparency as to what exactly will surface there, and we encourage that there be more information offered as this is a vibrant, important space across the street here in Cleveland Park.
LOTS OF CONCERN , too about how other areas are taking our business away from us and making us as a neighborhood/ business - retail area less desirable to live in, where many roadblocks are there to even get or want to open a store or restaurant here in the vacant spaces. That is disheartening as we deserve to be, should be as desirable and imprtant a destination here in D.C. as any other area, even though we are older, we have weathered the many storms and still have so much to offer.
COME SHOP and DINE and EXERCISE here with us : keep supporting our community, we need it, we want to stay open for you all, we are only able to be here with your active support. Tell others, spread the word, Cleveland Park is a great area and we need to stick together and grow more together.
ON THE POSITIVE SIDE I often hear new customers coming here, wanting to lve here becasue of our community and it's look and feel and variety of small shops and businesses that are not chain stores. That is good, we love hearing that. We are small businesses here to offer you something more personal, more special , more important tahn simply only price.
ONLINE shopping is hurting many retail operations, please think carefully before ordering something online because it is simpler and sometimes less expensive, they do not have the operating costs that we do, and a world with no retail at all would be rather bleak.
SORRY For The Lecture, I only pass it on as our enighborhood now, more than ever, needs lots of love and care and support. Like so many today we are surviving, certainly not thriving, and we do offer some great services and sense of contact and community that enriches us all, as being able to talk to someone is essential to many of us : our life-blood.
REMEMBER To Contact Your RET! Many of you do not know what a RET is? I know. I ask many of those that sell to me : " What does your RET say / think? " They look at me quizzically? RET?!? Spell it? What is that, what are you saying, asking, talking about?!?
A RET is short for retailer, just as a SOMM is short for sommelier. Consult your RET and have an eye-to-eye conversation where you will learn, have someone immediately there to question, ask advice, talk one-to-one with and get hopefully the information you need to proceed. A RET is here to assist you, we here at Cleveland Park feel very strongly about this and want to do all that we can to have an open / transparent conversation, on-going with you all, it is how we will grow and achieve more together as a community that stays and works , plays and smiles and bonds together in difficult times.
I AM ON FIRE today, much as I have recently siad that Theresa Morrison was on-fire here this past Saturday as she waxed poetic over all the fine Austrian wines of the HOEPLER Winery in Burgenland, Austria. It was inspiring to see and hear Theresa in action as she dscribed and told many stories about here visit there to the winery to see owners Jost and Henry his son - both that have been here. Their wines are perfect for this warmer weather, although it does Yo-Yo back and forth and can be quite confusing at thimes.
WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW is an old store email that I wrote on May 7th, 2013 I believe and sent to you all! Read and enjoy it and check for current availability, vintages, prices, and enjoy! Thanks for everything, Tuesday, May 9th, 2017, ...   TONY
LOOKS LIKE RAIN THIS WEEK  and you may not to go out so call us and we will deliver to you. It's our pleasure. Just let us know what you are interested in and we will come by and save you from getting any more wet than you already may be from this constant rain, clouds and gray, no sunshine, dampness and puddles everywhere that eventually permeates everything we are wearing as well as within us effecting our moods, feelings and thoughts. Let us bring you some liquid sunshine, we have it in so many colors, forms, textures, from the driest of dries to the sweetest of sweetest, from clear to golden and green and brown and dark and blue, from still to sparkles - few and bigger bubbles or more and really tiny ones like in real French champagne! SOMETHING for EVERYONE is our motto.  WE'VE ALL HAD FULL PLATES and it has been exciting to hear from customers about some of them like the NIKE WOMEN'S SERIES running marathons. One of our customers this past Saturday had just participated in the first one held here on Pennsylvania, 13 mile marathon starting on Freedom Plaza with 14 thousand-strong I believe that she said. It all started in San Fransisco with firemen dressed in tuxedos bringing the female runners Tiffany boxes with necklaces. Joan Benoit-Samuelson was there, at this one in D.C. our female customer relaying all of this to me also got a Tiffany box with a Tiffany necklace. She showed it to me. Admission started at $160 per runner and it went to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. ALL GOOD. I loved hearing all of this. So many great causes. She received her Tiffany box here from a man dressed in a tux - showed me the picture, really nice. She had a broad smile on her face as she showed it to me.
WHERE WILL THE NEXT one be held? I should have asked?
I ALSO SPOKE TO ANOTHER WOMAN recently that was all excited about discovering the Barclay Bar Calvados Collection and organic spirits menu in New York City at 111 East 48th Street. Barbara told me that there was some insane number of French Normandy Calvados bottles to sample and order the one that you preferred. She told me that she had sampled a really old one. Being an avid Calvados lover as I am, and knowing that we have many customers that love French apple brandy as I do I asked her to email me the place and address and phone number, etcetera. Thanks Barbara. She did, too : 1), and  2) This all makes me wonder what we have to offer here in Washington D.C.? It is worth checking if we have something similar here so that you can support D.C. and our local economy before heading north to the Big Apple. Cheers. Please do respond here and let us know any of your thoughts? We'd love to hear the? How many of you love apple brandy?

THIS PAST FRIDAY with Jody Jackman we tried the COUSINO-MACUL Chilean wines from the Maipo Valley and they all showed really well as expected. ALL the wines are still in stock and available here for any of you that missed this incredible event to honor Arturo Cousino that was just in town here in Cleveland Park about a week and a half ago. What a great moment that was to see him again and have him back here. The LOTA Bordeaux blend may be enjoyed now or aged and it will only show better with time. It's still very young. Cleveland Park Wines Tues. May 1st, 12 Store Email
Happy Cinco De Mayo this Friday all : we have plenty of tequila, Margarita mix and triple sec to accomodate you all!
IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW as we get into this May with some lovely flowers and plenty of rain and drizzle promised this weekend to keep everything lush in delicate greens and lots and lots of that accented with some nice colors provided by our flowers, many of them lavender, delicate sky-blues , some yellows and lingering-late-flowering Azaleas, too. The Dutch Irises are so pretty, too now. Anyway, when it's warm enough and dry enough it's nice to be outside and we have plenty of beers, ciders ,  wines and mixed drinks spirits  to recommend to you.
WE ARE STILL dealing with pollen, that is still with us, I swept quite a bit away yesterday. We were lucky to miss the storn that was supposed to hit us last night, that is all good.
I WROTE This back in May 2012 I believe and here we are the second day of May and it sure is beautiful today, as nice as it gets, a lovely drive to work here this morning, one that really has set the tone for me to start my glorious week here in Cleveland Park and at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits.
ALL IS WELL, swell, alive and inspiring today as the humidity drops and the rain has stopped for the moment and the clouds have moved on an there are again baby blue skies above.
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT budget seems to be approved ( except for a tweet this morning I hear ? ), and that is through September, all good, encouraging and that is reassuring in these difficult times.
YESTERDAY everything was humdi and heavy, hot and sticky, and it was one of those days when I thought to myself that I would not push myself too far as that is not good for my health or the health of any of us.
STEADY AND SLOW yesterday, made it through, enjoyed getting some things done off my " To Do Honey Do Too " list, all good.
TODAY is a wonderful day to enjoy ourselves as more rain is coming and so that means more clouds and humidity, so : take advantage of today and make some great mixed drinks tonight, drink some fun beers, and sip some great wine : all along with whatever meals you prepare for yourselves today

Chill 30 minutes, enjoy with a meal, simple or fancy, this is a real treat.
     3) ' Allegoria ' Primitivo , also a Gioia Del Colle dry red that sees no time in oak and so is the perfect wine to enjoy now slightly-chilled with some finger foods, ohhhh yeah. I like this and would love to sit around sipping it and chatting with family and friends, old and new!

     6) ' Rivedible ' Rosso Relativo / Rosato 2011 from Alice's own Azienda Agricola ALICE BONACCORSI, from Mt. Chill 40 minutes and  " Ruby take your love to town ... ".
     7) Riserva 2008 Primitivo Gioia Del Colle V.Q.P.R.D. dry mature flavorful 80% Primitivo and 20% Aglianico from Marianna's own family's Azienda Agricola PIETRAVENTOSA vienard in Puglia, Italy, On Special for $39.99, down from $49.99 : come get some of this or the younger more youthful 2010 : both On Special at $39.99, both marvels in their own right. THIS is still THE YEAR OF THE WOMAN, and appreciating all that women add to the rich fabrics of our lives, and supporting them and giving them the credit to make their own choices. We firmly believe in this, and support two casues here that many of you expressed support for when I asked you a simple question ? : " What cause is nearest and dearest to your hearts? " You responded in unison Planned Parenthood, and Cervical Cancer followed after, and so we are collecting donations here for both, have already sent a check from you all to Planned Parenthood. I know this may not please all, and we respect that there are different points of views on these issues, but I do not feel that any of this is political, just different points of view that each and every person deserves the right to decide what they believe and chose to do.
THANKS AGAIN for everything, all your support, your love, your business! You are golden! Cheers,
THANK YOU TEACHERS for all that you do : read these stories below from two teachers that I know and love dearly told to me last night.
AND TODAY is glorious and the start of a new month and all my attention this week will be to celebrate and acknowledge our infinite debt to the teachers today and in the past ( those in the futre , too ) that have helped to mold and inspire us to be the most that we can be ,the most successful, the most happy and content and well-rounded.
LAST NIGHT I LISTENED to my wife tell our daughter about her day working with two out of the three kids in elementary school that she was supposed to help along with their project.
THESE THREE students had been asked by their teacher to write something, given a week to do so, about what restaurant they liked the most, and why? It took so long with the first two that she did not make it to the third, that will probably happen today.
ANYWAY, my wife started by talking to the little girl first and discovered that with a whole week this little girl had only written two setences! My wife asked her what had happened. had she spent too much time talking to the other students, did she think her teacher would give her a good grade, etcetera? Well, the little girl cried and my wife sent her off to her desk to add to these two sentences while she went to talk to the little boy. She went off in tears. She needed to say what she liked about a certain dish served at the restaurant and not just name  what it was.
TURNS OUT the little boy finally found his paper in a binder after five or more minutes, and it, too only had two sentences and again, my wife had a similar conversation with this boy. He, too had been distracted and was also given the same chance to include some other words about what he liked at McDonald's . He did not cry but he was flustered and had to pull it together which I believe he did? In his original two sentences he managed to include some pretty impressive words like succulent. Where di he learn or hear that, in third grade I believe?
MY DAUGHTER HAD an equally difficult story to relate about one of her fifth grade girl students that was taking charge of her group working on their project that would be evaluated by other teachers.
MY DAUGHTER had pulled her aside to go over their progress, had changed certain words on the computer the girl was working with, and observed as the girl changed them back to her words right in front of my daughter.
MY DAUGHTER talked more to this girl, tried to advise her in this group project, knew the little girl was mad about things and basically bossing the other students ( none of them felt comfortable in this group my daughter discovered with time ), and realized, too that there was more at work here than just this group project that was alienating her and making it a difficult environement for everyone there in the classroom as well as in this group.
I TAKE ALL this time to write this to show as many of us already know that teachers have to be many things to many students, and it is becasue of their diligence and understanding, care and love that as many of us turn out as well as we do.
LET US ALL take this moment to remember, to think about , to say thanks to all our teachers : you teachers are the cream of the crop, you really are!
I KNOW that the little girl pulled it together and was able to show more later for her teacher.

THANKS AGAIN, support our teachers! Pay them for their services equally, man or woman, they deserve the same pay depending on their abilities and services rendered today.   TONY

WHAT FOLLOWS Below is an old store email I wrote and posted in May 2012 ... read and enjoy it if you have time.  TONY 5/2/2017
THE JAQK CELLARS wine-tasting this Friday, May 4th, 2012 from 5-8PM is tops on our minds as we have had an overwhelming response with so many people RSVPing that it gives us all pause as if even a small fraction of those of you that have said you are attending do , in fact come : it raises the question : how can we be proactive and ensure that everyone has a good experience, tries all seven of the JAQK CELLARS California wines and has a chance to buy them if they want? We are, of course, working very hard on this to be sure that we do everything that we can to make this a grand success for everyone. There are thundershowers forecast for Friday so let's put all our heads together and hope/pray that it does not rain during our wine-tasting.
I HAVE TALKED TO SHERYL the manager of Firehook Bakery and if it's too crowded here you can all take some of the food here over there and sit out back and wait till it's not so insane here. We want everyone to enjoy themselves and so we can all take a break over there if we like. Just ask one of us and we will help you and explain what we have set up. Cheers.
AS USUAL I HAVE FOUND so many great things to bring to your attention this morning. From Santos there are so really " new " and some older discoveries that I want to mention : all that deliver big to you. Here are some of Santos' beers to consider :

     2) " Simcoe SPRING Ale " from the PEAK " Organic " Brewing Company ( $10.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, USDA Certified, Portland, ME. ) are : " pure ingredients, delicious beer ". I was really impressed out our last tasting of the PEAK beers. As a matter of fact, and something that I noticed immediately : this one of the very first times that across the board I was equally impressed with all the beers that I sampled. That rarely happens for me. Cheers.
     3) " Golden Cap " Saison Ale from the NEW HOLLAND Brewing Company, Holland , Michigan, 12 Fl. Oz. bottles, 6.25% Alcohol by volume,, ) : " Brewed with wheat's ancestor, spelt.      1) VIGNE Gin De France from NOUAISON ( $35.99 a bottle, 43.9% alcohol by volume, produced by Eurowinegate-Cognac-France, from Domaine Select Wine Estates ) is " new and exciting ". Sounds mighty appealing, it really does. Check it out : a class-act!

Earlier as I was typing this store email for you all Santos said that there was a winemaker waiting to see me. I came out to help a customer and saw two well-dressed-in-dark-blue suits gentlemen and I introduced myself after helping the two lady customers. Scott Siegel immediately congratulated me on my salesmanship representing three different off-dry still rose wines (  a) the  Virginia RAPIDAN RIVER  rhaspberry-flavored, grape with natural flavor added, $12.99, - I remember years ago working with Yoachim Hollerith ,  b) " Les Ligeriens " Rose D'Anjou 2011 - On Special for $10.99 - we just tasted it here this past weekend and I said I it was a blend of Chenin Blanc and some some Gamay in my opinion  -  and  3) LE LAPIN Paso Robles, California White Zinfandel 2010 , $9.99, 12.9% alcohol by volume. Scott went on to say that he liked how I mentioned the possible blend in the French Loire Valley rose d'Anjou.
I ASKED SCOTT SIEGEL what winery that he was with after he and Rick Scully gave me their business cards and congratulated us again on having their product - just one. NO : Scott and rick were not winemakers as Santos had thought : they represent the ultimate CASA DRAGONES white Tequila. They poured some for me to taste once I asked to see the bottle and asked the price : $279.99 a bottle. We have some here. It comes in a beautiful and stylish old apothecary decanter that they found in a museum. It's only a copy of course and so understated, just like this " Joven " category of tequila that is in, fact a blend. Scott told me all about it and I appreciate that. I LOVED THE TASTE : so smooth and creamy and elegant and delicate and subtle and refined and a charmer-pleaser-delicate teaser. I have some her so come by and ask to taste it. They poured me a large glass so that I could share it with you all. You only really just need a sip or two at the most to come under it's spell.
THE SOFT DEEP SKY-BLUE color of the box and part of the label alone is so peaceful, calming and soothing - like great karma , zen, everything in balance and everything positive. It's pretty amazing tequila. Come and ask me for a sip. For more info go to :, and on Twitter at Twitter@Casa_Dragones. Cheers and thanks Rick Scully and Scott Siegel.
       1) KRAEMER Chardonnay Brut, Caves de LANDIRAS - kosher for Passover ( $15.99 ) tastes like a cremant-style and is really very nice. We are thrilled to have it back once again : our third order I believe?
     DRY WHITE -
       1) Vinho Verde dry, light, slightly-sparkling Portuguese white from SANTOLA ( $7.99, with only 9% alcohol ) will be great once it gets really hot and humid and everyone still wants to drink white wine and be outside. Find some shade and be slow in all your movements and enjoy. Get some now to be ahead of the crowd. So far the response has been quite positive to this vinho verde.
     DRY ROSE -
       1) Indigenous grape variety Bobal from Spain, this " La Senda " dry Bobal rose ( On Special for $9.99 a bottle,, 13% alcohol by volume, vino de la Tierra de Castilla ) has deep, dark, lighter red colors and has softened in the bottle. It had more immediate spice and acidity and it has mellowed nicely so that we may all enjoy it with or without food.
     DRY RED -
       1) Valpolicella 2010 Vigneto RAFAEL Classico Superiore from TOMMASI Viticoltori ( $16.99,, S. Pietro in Cariano, Veneto, Italy ) has got some good flesh and body and is an excellent food wine : medium-bodied. Excellent when you grill - chill it slightly.
Friday, May 4th, 2012 ( 5-8PM ) : We have our launch of the JAQK CELLARS California wines ( 7-8 bottles, $30-$80 a bottle, ALL on DEEP SALE for this launching! Join us, no charge. Come and try both these excellent reds and whites that have previously been sold directly from the winery ).
AND BECAUSE of the EXTRAORDINARY RSVP response : " We are expecting about 400-plus customers for tasting on Friday, May 4th, 2012. To serve you better we will prefer that customers with the last name starting with the letters A-M visit us from 5PM to 6:30PM and with last names starting with the letters N-Z visit us from 6:30PM onwards ". Thanks. This was we can properly taste you all to give you all the full experience. Cheers.

SATURDAY, May 5th, 2012 ( 2-6PM ) : We have Estebe here of his Tradewinds Imports import company to taste some excellent Spanish and Argentinian wines. This will be fun as Estebe specializes in these wines and the quality level is through the roof, just like you all love it! Come and bring family and friends. There is never any charge. Everyone is always welcome.

I AM SURE I HAVE FORGOTTEN MANY THINGS but it is time to send this email now as the weather is still nice outside and you can enjoy some of these items before the deluge or rain later today?!? WE will see. Check us out further at :, on Facebook at : become our friends at : Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits, on Twitter at : cpwinespirits, too. Cheers.

Week's Store Email 4/25- Written By Me, Anthony Quinn Read & Enjoy, Earth Day Our Right Every Day Always, Pass On A Good Earth!

Cleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine

Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits
EARTH DAY , EARTH NIGHT , Earth is our planet our home our gift that we pass on to our children hopefully in the best shape possible, as it is what gives us our ability to exist and to be. Earth Day and Science Day were celebrated here all week last week, and the march on the Mall was a big success and we had many customers returning from it very pleased to have been a part of it. Loved seeing their smiles here as they stopped to make their purchases and to sample the fine wines ( and to meet owner - winemaker Alice Bonaccorsi of her own winery in Mt. Etna, Sicily called Azienda Agricola ALICE BONACCORSI with wine importer Robert Kennedy here, too!
WOW, as I was typing these last few words Robert Kennedy walked in and so we started to talk about Marianna's visit this Saturday from her own winery PIETRAVENTOSA in Puglia, Italy, that will be wonderful, really special! What a treat. Marianna makes great wines from the Primitivo grape in reds and one fabulous dry rose, too.
THIS IS A CLOSE and winderful wine community here and everyone just started showing up , one after the other, Narayan that is scheduled to taste here this Friday, Sotiris Bafitis that was just here this past Friday tasting with you all, Doug that is Robert Kennedy's best friend and was here to say " hi ! " and get together with Robert, then Dianna Richer came with her French supplier from Terrisson Wines, Benjamin Menouret, ... and we met, chatted, took a group picture and here I am now with Sotiris talking Greek wines that are missing from our shelves and so we need an infusion of them here PRONTO that will arrive here this Friday, April 28th, 2017.
SO : this email will be more casual than most and I will discuss some of the issues about wine that are ' near-and-dear ' to me.
TRANSPARENCY : there is none on a large scale.
1) The larger companies that sell wine that do not even own vineyards or have wineries, that buy up wine or grape must and blend and add to it are :
     1) dumbing us all down.
     2) putting many additives into the living grape juice that will become their version of wine, BUT , that tastes NOTHING to me like fresh grape unfermented juice, that ...
- destroys the feeling of drinking something alive and honest, that has both strengths and weaknesses, that is not ' fixed ', changed, altered, muted, dulled, bulked-up, put on steroids I like to say.
     3) we do not need more cute labels that have NOTHING at all to do with the liquid inside the bottle. Nothing wrong with labels that attract, but get the wineries to put on the labels what they are adding to the grape must-juice? Let us know what dead chemicals and additives are being included to ' fix ' into ONE TASTE- a taste that , to me is undrinkabel. That taste tastes to me like ...
- cardboard, like wet straw, like a taste I cannot decipher, that reminds me nothing of real wine that has been fermented and become wine and that has it's strengths and its weaknesses, and is what it is, not altered to be ...
- an international taste ...
-to taste like every other taste that is now called wine ...
- to be international so everyone can appreciate it.
BUT : What are they tasting, what are they appreciating?
3) Many ' new ' wine drinkers have not tasted anything but what is being sold now everywhere, in every grocery store, every supermarket, ever club that offers a few known labels at low prices. These markets, chain stores are offering inexpensive prices on these brand name wines, and are often coming out with their own labels, and sometimes those labels are the same wine-juice that are sold under more recognized labels, and yet many do not know this.
4) What is sold as wine today often is also a blend that includes grape juice-turned-into-wine from many places on earth ...
-like some Chilean wine blended with California grapes.
-some Australian wine blended with California wine,..
- some labelled " American ' that are being sold. for example at the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina, that are most all made from grape juice purchased in California, Washington Sate, or New York, maybe even Virginia?
- confusing all of this at best.
5) Tell us where the grape-juice-wine is coming from?
6 ) Tell us what we are really drinking?
7) Tell us why the additives are being added into living grape juice-wine?
- to what purpose? what do these additives really add or fix or alter or change?
8) Why does the Pinot Noir from California taste so beefy, so hearty, so robust, so thick, so dark in color?
-tell us and write on the label that , in reality, 5-10%, up to 15% has been added to that Pinot Noir to ' bulk it up ' so that it tastes good to many that are dining in a steak house?!?
9) Tell us where the grapes originally come from?
- tell us on labels that many if not almost all of the grape varities are originally from Europe and not from Argentina, for example, where everyone thinks Malbec comes from and not from France.
- I am knit-picking at some of this, I know, but I am trying to make many points, and paint a larger picture for you all that is confusing and never or hardly ever told, spoken, referred to, acknowledged.
- we are all running scared, we do not need to be.
10) Pricing is key, we all have budgets, we get that, really we do.
11) We thank you here for your business.
- without you here we could not exist without your support. Thank you.
- but I feel the tremendous need to share some of this.
12 ) Boundaries are no longer acknowledged or respected. Everyone wants to be everything to everyone, and so the larger retail outlets ( including those that mail to you ) are doing a bit of everything, offering a bit of everything to you all, ...
13) they are not specializing in anything much anymore, just offering whatever they think they can sell to you?

14) SO : let us have some more transparency in the products we buy and enjoy.

15) Let us, too, understand as best as possible our priorities? What is most important? What do we want most?
16 ) I often think the phrase : " it's good enough. " We all settle so often.
17) We are here to shake things up, to ..
- give your your options ...
- to respect your intelligence and not try and dumb you down.
- to listen to you, ...
- to work with you, your needs . desires, ...
- to try and stretch you some to include ' new ' experiences, as many as you will allow us to offer to you.
ALL IS WELL if we try and understand more of what is really going on, try and understand what we have as options, what we are buying, what we are tasting in this case here at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits.
WE WILL DO everything we can to be honest and transparent with you, to explain and to help you make the choices that best suit your needs.
THANK YOU for continuing to let us do so.
REMEMBER that the door is open and that this is a two-way conversation. If you have any questions about what I have typed here quickly - heatedly, please let me know? If you do not agree, please let me know?
AS SIGOURNEY WEAVER told MELANIE GRIFFITH in " Working Girl " the movue many years ago : " Who makes it happen? " she asks Melanie. " I do. " responds Melanie. Love those words , have taken them to heart always, all ways.
SO : What is exciting this week here at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits for you:

" Try some, see what you think? Try it chilled by itself, too, or with shaved ice?
     2) Old Tom Gin from GREENHOOK GINSMITHS , crafted and bottled in Brooklyn, NY, $47.99,  : " The  ' Gin Craze ' was born in Britain in the late 1600's, during a period of tension with France. In an attempt to reduce imports of French brandy, King William III relaxed laws to entice English corn farmers into gin distilling. The gin of this period were pot distilled, resulting in high character spirits that were sweetened and nicknamed ' Old Tom ' and are considered the ' missing link ' between Dutch Genever and modern gins. ... "
1) The owner-winemaker tasting with Alice Bonaccorsi of her own Azienda Agricola ALICE BONACCORSI in Mt. Etna, Sicily was a huge success this past Saturday : Earth Day - Science Day, with Alice's Etna Rosso 2013, a 80% blend of Nerello Mascalese, and 20% Nerello Cappuccio, with 14% alcohol by volume, signed bottles here for gifts by Alice, this On Special at $29.99 a bottle is showing perfectly, really completely balanced, charming, fleshy and firm, generous and gregarious, rounded and rich, ahhhhhh : love it so now. Medium-to-light-bodied : a splendid dry red to chill 30 minutes and serve indoors, outdoors, with a meal or all by itself - you choose.
For the Chateauneuf-du-Pape below check out this label! It  says it all : a small profile drawing of une dame en chapeau en forme! Oui oui oui!
NEWS : a tense time this week with our government budget and we have plenty of things to help you get through the stress and the strain of it all.
MANY PEOPLE come to visit and to taste, to share, to introduce, and so I want to take the time here to thanks Barry Dodds , Ambassador to the FREEMARK ABBEY Napa California wines for coming by and tasting, ... for Michael Honig the President of the HONIG Vienyard and Winery for coming by and personally tasting an assortment of his wines, too from the excellent Sauvignon Blanc  to his Bartolucci Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 : all treats and well-made.
I AM MISSING a Pinot seminar and tasting today of Oregon wines, and that saddens me, but it is important for me to be here for you all, too when you need advice, just like Graham needed as his good friend that loves southern Rhone wines is coming by to visit, and so I recommended a Chateaneuf-Du-Pape made by a female winemaker that Jayde tatsed me on that blew me away for it's seriosness, heartiness, complexity, power, meaty balls, ,,, the DOMAINE GALEVAN , $57.99, 2011, with 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre, with 14.5% alcohol : this packs a big muscular kiss on your tongue, senses and palate : enjoy with a meal, open and let breethe almost two hours before enjoying with a meal now.
WINE By Chris and Tony :

1) " Laika ' 2013 Gruner Veltliner from the OLD MISSION PENNINSULA in Michigan, $18.99 is a real treat : developed, flavorful, chill and serve now : a treat!

2) Poulet & Fils ' Tradition ' Methode Dioise Ancestrale from France's Clairett de Die region of the Rhone valley, this fruity sparkling white, $15.99, chilled nicely is a perfect foil now for this damp , and cold today! Lovely.
3) DAO DOC Portugal dry red Colheita Selecionada, a blend of 40% Alfrocheiro, 40% Tinta Roriz and 20% Touriga Nacional : a robust boquet, deep dark color and yet a an elegant tatse well-knit and polished that is best with some food! At $13.49 this is another Portuguese steal!
3) Karmena a dry Turkish red blend from Anatolia, from DIREN , 2014, of 30% Syrah, 30% Okuzgozu, 15% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Bogazkere, too : with 13% alcohol by volume, I like the honesty, the integrity, the trueness to these wines and when paired with food, chilled slightly to focus and energize their flavors - then they blossom and are a treasure!
4) 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa's Wellington district, David brought me his DIEMERSFONTEIN red, $21.99, and I loved it for it's polish, fruit-forward, silk and steel mesh that are a treat to sip and enjoy with a meal, yes! Yes si oui a Big YES to this.

What Follows Below is an old store email that I wrote and sent back in April 2013 just after the Boston marathon tragedy and Earth Day ... read it if you have the time. Cheers, TONY 4/25/2017
EARTH DAY Yesterday, and glad to see that there was more focus on it this year from all that I have heard and read recently. I was able to work, weed, rake, cut back ornamental grasses and to mow the lawn that sprung up with everything in shades of bright baby greens everywhere and all needing my immediate attention. Oh, and the bird baths got lots of fresh water on two days in a row and the robins, sparrow, cardinals and more all appreciated this from the flutter of their rapid wings and hops in the water before flying off as quickly as they came. Nice.
WE ARE PICKING UP THE PIECES still from the Boston Marathon tragedy last week and that has been really hard to bear. Lots being written about it. I spoke to one of our customers that was here that is working on sorting through everything that has happened so suddenly and so unexpectedly and what I took away from him in our brief conversation that was very positive : he talked about what we could learn from this to avert this happening again.
THEN THE FLIGHT DELAYS I read about this morning from the effects of the sequestration set into motion recently by Congress : lots to deal with. I hear on MPR Radio yesterday talk about this and one of those that called in said that she was just going to be even earlier arriving at the airport to be sure that everything would work as smoothly as possible on her end, expecting the worst and happy when the situation was better than she anticipated!
I DRANK SOME fine 2005 Italian " Super Tuscan " Merlot on Sunday evening with our neighbor that needed some " adult company " after having been with her three children all day. We were happy to have her come and chat and the wine really had lovely overtones of tobacco , tar and leather and creamy spice overtones. It was a food wine and it tasted great with our meal. I am not mentioning the name now as we do not have any to sell anymore and I do not want to tease you all.
HAVING SAID THIS we do have some of the " original " Super Tuscan Carmignano 2009 " Piaggia - Il Sasso  " from MAURO VANNUCCI, $40.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, from in Poggio a Caiano, Tuscany that pretty much blew Eon and me away when we first bought this 2009 vintage to offer you all. This is a great and a delightful, wonderful splurge for a nice moment.
IT WILL WARM YOU today with this breeze and cool, colder weather that is hesitant to do anything too quickly and is supposed to warm up today and be in the 60's? Are we there yet? I am here inside in our office but will go check soon. ANYWAY: this wine from Carmignano , the " Il Sasso " is a spectacular, classic, world-class Italian red that must be tasted to be believed. Cheers.
RAVI WAS JUST TALKING TO ME, EVERYBODY in the beer, liquor and wine business has been talking , EVERYONE about the Costco that just opened here in Washington D.C. : there's lots of changes, the BEFORE and AFTER of Costco and it has already been very hard on many as they muscle their way into Washington D.C. and start trying to call all the shots here. I wish I could feel good about what I am hearing and saying, I have only heard negative things so far, and really only from people in our business. It is quite upsetting and I know that this is only one side. I do feel, however, that I should let it be known that like many big companies they are shaping a whole new " scene " here that. from everything that I hear and see so far would be happy to have none of us here that have been here for so many years now serving you as well as we could and can and still hope to do so for many years to come. ...
IT'S SHADES OF  the little pharmacy up the street across from the Connecticut Avenue entrance to our National Zoo that has been effected greatly ( also been there for forever ) by the larger drugstore chains from everything that I hear but that no one wants to admit to, or let known that they spoke of it for fear of recrimination from lawyers and so on. Upsetting. TIMES, they sure " are a changin' " to quote Bob Dylan. What can we all do?
BUT HEY, It's Time Now to talk about some beer for this weather. What does Santos have up his sleeves for you all ?  :
     1)  KULMBACKER Edelberg Legendares KULMBACKER Pils ( On Special for $13.99 a 6-pack, Scho handlich, from Kulmbach, Germany, since 1516, Bavaria ) : I went to their Facebook page and " liked " them and they have already responded on our Facebook page. I asked them for more information and hopefully they will include that soon.
This is, however, A PERFECT BEER with only 4.9% alcohol by volume  when the temperatures decide to finally rise as they surely must?!And NOW FOR FUN : the ingredients are : acqua, malto d"orzo, luppolo, estratti di luppolo ... and in yet another language  :  Zutaten :  Wasser, Gerstenmalz, Hopfen, Hopfenextrakt. I love this : Where are you Gabrielle when I need you? Come and try this delightful Pils.
     2)  TROUBLE DOUBLE IPA Brewed For Us by FOUNDERS Brewing ( On Special for $13.99 a 4-pack of 12-ounce bottles,  9.4% alcohol by volume, Grand Rapids, MI, ) : " An Imperial IPA that was brewed to turn your world upside down. Hops will have you coming and going ...  ".
     3) Hommel Ale from POPERINGS ( On Special for $9.99 a 1 Pt. 9.4Fl. Oz bottle, 7.5% alcohol by volume, product of Belgium, by NV Van Eecke, B-8978 Watou ) : looks and tastes like the real McCoy! Looks also like it would be PERFECT for this cooler weather now. Cheers and enjoy.
     4) Black Mocha Stout from HIGHLAND Brewing Company ( On Special for $10.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, from Asheville, North Carolina,, since 1994 ) : " ... having a very malty body with a large, roasted chocolate flavor . ...  ". Taste it, great to have it with the other flavors, too from North Carolina!
     1)  EFFEN Cucumber and Vanilla Flavored Vodka from Holland ( On Special for $29.99/ regularly $33.99 a bottle, 37.5% alcohol by volume, go to : for more recipes and ideas ) : " Expertly distilled from wheat grain. Deliciously enhanced with natural cucumber flavors. Cheers.
          TWO ( 2 ) Great Single Malt " Values " :
1)SPEYBURN Aged 10 Years Highland Single Malt Whisky, established 1897 ( On Special for $26.99 a bottle, 43% alcohol by volume,, Rothes, Moray AB38 7AG Scotland ) : "  .... created using fresh spring water from Speyside. It's this water which gives our whisky its distinctive character and unique flavour. " Try it, everyone loves it : very smooth and a FABulous value, too.
     2) OLD PULTENEY Aged 12 Years " The Maritime Malt " Single Malt Scotch Whisky ( On Special for $42.99 a bottle, Est. 1826, from Wick, Scotland ) : this single malt spends time on the sea and takes on a distinctive sea-ocean flavoring that is unique and all it's own. Our customers love it. Heartier, beefier than the SPEYSIDE. Another FABulous value for you all!
We just purchased some of the DACANTUS Aero Wine-Aerating pourers for you all to make it easier to enjoy your wines now and not have to age them or wait for them tom open so slowly when you finally pull the corks. They cost $14.99 and we recommend that you try them to make your wine experiences more enjoyable, especially when the wines do need to be cellared more ans especially when you are in a hurry and cannot wait! Also easy to carry with you and use on picnics, hikes, other camping trips. Also make great gifts and these are so affordable. Come check them out. Cheers. Available at our register.
WINES from MICHEL and from TONY :
     1) 2010 Sauvignon Blanc from JARDIN Stellenbosch, South Africa ( $16.99,14% alcohol by volume, Integrity and Sustainability, synergy between soul and soil ) : " ... produced by California-trained Gary and Kathy Jordan on their Stellenbosch property ". Michel and I both liked this quite a bit.
     2) Viognier 2011 from Virginia from STONE MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS ( $19.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, Dyke, VA. ) : located in an area known as Bacon Hallow. Really showing nicely. Had our local rep David of Grappoli Imports pour it here recently on one of our weekend wine-tastings.
     3) 2007 Marsannay " Les Echezots " from the DOMAINE BALLARIN & F ( usually the F would end with " ils " boys, in this case since there are four daughters and no sons it would end : " illes " girls! I like that, I like it a lot : Go Ladies! )... a dry red 100% Pinot Noir red Burgundy that still needs a couple of hours to open up ( use the aerator above for $15 ) and then enjoy it for it's lovely medium-to-light-bodied taste and flavors of bright strawberries and cherries. It's so silky and fine, so elegant. On Special while it still lasts for $22.99 a bottle : regularly $36.99 a bottle. A GREAT BURGUNDY STEAL! Try some, treat yourselves.
     4) Cote de Nuits-Villages " Vieilles Vignes - Old Vines " 2005/ great year in Burgundy- from the DOMAINE HENRI NAUDIN-FERRAND 100% dry red Pinot Noir by law ( On Special for $22.99 a bottle, regularly $45.99 a bottle while supplies last, Margny-les-Villers, 21700 NuitsSaint-Georges, Burgundy, France ) : smells like a strong-scented-perfumed barnyard! It's intense, it let's you know that it is there! The taste is mush rounder, fuller, more appealing and I like it quite a bit. It's a food wine. As Jim Reeves of Comete wines that was pouring it here this past weekend - we both thought it would be a good red meat wine: it's got that presence and flavor and boldness and needs food to " flesh " it out. Great deal, great year, great food wine - get some NOW before we sell out soon. Cheers.

Wakefield Estate Dinner W/ Owner Justin Taylor ( Winery Called TAYLORS Cellars In Australia ), At Del Friscos Double Eagle Steak

Friday, April 21, 2017

Great Dinner With Justin Taylor ( Company Director & Export Manager ) Of WAKEFIELD Estate Wines Of Clare Valley, Australia ( Wines Include The Pioneer, The Visionary , St. Andrews Jarman TWP ... ) , Cheers, Great Meal Last Night, Thursday At Del Friscos Double Eagle Steak House Wash DC, NW, ... 4/20/2017

Dinner was grand, and as I told Justin Taylor the owner that what made the evening for me so special was how impressive, balanced, focused, iteresting, tasty, good character and definition to each of the wines, and meeting him, too : the rest at Del Friscos Double Eage Washington DC was icing on the cake!
From the bone-dry Alsace-Style Riesling to the first Cabernet Sauvignon, onot the second and third Cabernet, then the two Shiraz reds ( my least favorite of the whole evening was the first Shiraz - otherwise the highest praise indeed for the others. And the only reason I was not big on the first Shiraz is that, to me, it was balanced but not as distinguished as the others. And a secret in some of the reds : the eucalyptus accents! ).
The wines include : The Pioneer, The Visionary, St. Andrews, and Jarman. Cheers mate!
The food, too was great. Chef Scott came out to say ' hello ", and between the seafood and the beef it was an incredible combination of these WAKEFILED Estate wines from Australia's Clare Valley ( called TAYLORS Wines there ) and the food. A real special moment for all of us.
It will be great to sell these wines here at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits 3423 Conn Ave. NW Washington DC, 20008 202-363-4265 in May. Stay-tuned. Thanks Scott, Grayden, Matt, Jeff, Chris Scott, our waiter, too : you all did a grand job! Cheers, Anthony ( TONY ) Quinn 4/21/2017

Celebrating EarthDay EarthNight EarthRight Always!

Cleveland Park WineCleveland Park Beer, Liquor & Wine
Featuring a wide, international selection of fine wines, micro-brews and spirits

" E " 4 Earth! " Day " 4 Day, " N " 4 Night!

I'M TRYING TO SOUND NEW HIP AND ORIGINAL and intriguing here so that you wonder what I am saying and open this email! I wrote and posted this old store email shown below on April 20th, 2010! Seven years later I am still aware of all of this!
IT IS EARTH DAY on the 22nd! It should be every day and evey night : without our earth we are nothing as we cannot exist yet anywhere else but here on this incredible earth of ours. What a treat, an honor, a privilege, a delight, an adventure, magical, wonderful, special and mystical, too!

SO : We devote this whole week to talking about, acknowleging, appreciating, working to make and keep a better, cleaner, less-poluted, more healthy earth, planet, land, seas, skies, streams, lakes, oceans, mountains, hills, caves and more! What a paradise we have in many places, others we need to work on, and here we have many products that celebrate , embrace, work towards, do, participate, and share products that celebrate and disturb our earth as little as possible : yah!

Hope everyone had a great happy Passover or Easter. Sunday sure was beautiful, it was nice to be outside much of the day for my family, we enjoyed the flowering and blooming shrubs, azaleas, dogwoods, redbuds, wygelias, and so much more, as well as weather that made it so easy to enjoy all of this.
IT WAS ALSO Spring Break for many and so many of you rushed past us, back and forth, heading to the National Zoo. What a sight that is to behold.

I WILL MENTION three products here that make me think about our earth and planet : one beer, one liquor, and one wine. There are many and so you should come by and we will show you others as well. Here are the three I will mention in this weekly Tuesday store email :

IN BEER : THREE from MAINE BEER Company : From Freeport ...
What We Are All About :

" From day one, doing things right , no matter what. Taking care of our Earth and all of its creatures. Always trying to make better beer. "

     1) Our Happy, Hoppy Amber Ale, " Do what's right. Smile! " On Special for $7.99 a bottle , a 1Pt. .9 Fl. Oz. bottle, , with 7.2% alcohol by volume, : " On a rainy fall day in 2009, my five-year-old- daughter Zoe and I were wandering the streets in Bar Harbor and stumbled across the Whale Museum. Zoe loved it. It put a smile on her face. Hopefully our ale will do the same for you. " And we will all have a whale of a good time, too! Cheers!!
     2) " Another One " India Pale Ale " Do what's right. Drink this beer fresh. " On Special for $7.99 a 1Pt .9 Fl. Oz. bottle,, with 7% alcohol by volume, : " Another One IPA and Weez use the same hops but different malts. The result- Another One is very light in color and Weez is very dark. Each however allow the hops to shine out front. " I need to know more about Weez, Gee Weez, enlighten me please!?!? Beer-talk is not the same as wine-talk, they overlap at times, but ohhhh so different.
     3) " Peeper " Pale Ale Do what's right. Drink this beer fresh. , On Special for $7.99 a 1 Pt .9 Fl Oz bottle,  : " After a few years of home brewing in our garage, my brother and I decided we should open a brewery so that we could share our beer. In 2009 we started with a one barrel system and worked on a single recipe, over and over, until Peeper was born. And now we have enough to share. Cheers? "
Check these out. We also have MO.
          In LIQUOR :
THREE From TIRRAS " Organic "
     1) Blanco 100% Agave USDA Organic Tequila, On Special for $26.99 a bottle : great to make a really fine Margarita, or to sip all by itself.
     2) Reposado , On Special for $29.99, again smooooothhh and clear and focused and sun-bright! I would love to sip this all on it's own, no need to do anything, just enjoy the pristine pure purity here!
     3) Anejo , On Special for $34.99, I love the extra depth and layers offered here, extra skins of flavor, a treat as each layer is another flavor that registers on my tongue slowly opening and revealing it's special charms.
I tried these years ago with my friend and rep Eddie Ofori and have loved them ever since, recommended them many hundreds of times, and always had praise from the customers that tried them.
          In WINE :
     1) " Nature ' wine from Portugal, a 2012 dry red from PACO Dos CUNHAS De SANTAR, estate-bottled, est. 1609 ( real history and tradition here ) , $11.99, a dry classic, old-fashioned red blend of 50% Touriga Nacional and 50% Tinta Roriz, yes.
This starts with the funky, earthy, barnyard-straw-hay-drying-warm-pungent bouquet that hits our noses quickly and that lingers and permates all our senses rapidly! It is a bit of a shock! The taste on the palate is the opposite and more welcome and soothing and so great when combined and paired with a meal.
I had leftover leg-of-lamb just now with wild rice and fresh asparagus shoots, and this ' Nature ' would have been wonderful, a real treat! With 14% alcohol by volume, from DAO, certified organic by SATIVA, I highly recommend this Portuguese red : a winner, a classic, a great value, too!

Come try this and clue me in , please!!!

WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW is an old store email I wrote and posted on April 20th, 2010. Read and enjoy it, too, if you have time! Cheers, TONY 4/18/2017
You may be surprised from now on as perhaps I have gotten into too much of a sure-thing and you already know what that is and so don't feel it necessary to check what I spend the better part of a Tuesday writing here for hopefully your benefit.
ALL IS GOOD and we do have some pretty great brut/brute/tasty/authentic/original and VALUE wines as well as beers and spirits. Ravi, Santos, Chris and I are always on the look-out for something either    " new and exciting "  or of   "  true value "   or both combined into one for your drinking enjoyment and ease on your pocket book! There seem to be still some really great values for us here in the Washington D.C. area.

WE NOW HAVE CLEVELAND PARK two/three and six bottle cloth carriers. Buy six bottles and get the 6-bottle carrier on your first six bottles and remember to bring it back with you when you come to shop here so that we do not have to charge you a nickle for a bag.

WE HAVE A " New " TONIC 4-Pack called " Q " Tonic ( $7.99 a 4-pack ). It's got 60% fewer calories than other tonic waters, is lightly sweetened with organic agave and made from handpicked Peruvian quinine.      THE WEATHER MAKES ME WANT TO TAKE A LONG LUNCH BREAK and sample some of these suggestions/ recommendations to follow :

       BIERES/ CERVESAS / BEER : Santos sez -
     1) " Consecrator Doppelbock " Beer from BELLS ( On Special $16.99 6-pack, 12-ounce bottles, brewed and bottled by BELL'S Brewery, Inc., Comstock, MI 49053, 8% alc. by volume ) is " a traditional doppelbock fermented with an old world lager yeast. Reddish brown in color, with a mild hop profile. " It's full-bodied beer with a lovely elegant malty lingering taste in the finish.
     2) Weissbier Hefe Weissbier from FRANZISKANER ( $7.99 12 oz. bottles, 6-pack, ) is brewed and bottled by SPATEN-FRANZISKANER-BRAU in Munich, Germany. It's nice to have back once again and I look forward to trying it as I like the SPATEN beers very much already.
     3) Gluten-Free Amber Ale ( All Natural Discovery ) from GREEN'S ( $6.99 1 pt. .9 Fl. Oz / 500 ml bottle, product of Begium, 6% alc. by volume, ) is " new and exciting "! " Green's Ales are brewed and bottled by DeProef Brouwerj, Lochristi, Gent, Belgium. Green's Ales DO NOT contain any of the following : Wheat and/or Barley, Crustaceans, Eggs, Fish, Peanuts, Soya beans, Milk, Lactose, Nuts, Celery, Mustard, Sesame seeds, Sulphur dioxide and Sulfites ".
     ALSO : GREEN'S " Quest " for $6.99 a 500ml bottle is also available ( no wheat, nor barley, all natural ).
     4) Imported William's Pear SIR PERRY ( $9.49 4-pack 500ml cans, pear cider, 6% alc. by volume, product of England ) is new and exciting and probably delicious now as it warms up considerably.
LIQUOR From Ravinder Sharma Is Charmant :
     1) Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey from FOUR ROSES ( $42.99, distilled and aged by FOUR ROSES distillery , LLC in Lawrenceville, Kentucky, 750ml, 50% alc. by volume ) is " new and very exciting ".
     2) 12-Year Old Rum Vieilli pendant 12 ans ( aged for 12 years ), this Ron Rhum from EL DORADO ( $24.99 750ml bottle, 40% alc. by vol. ) id=s made in Guyana and we are pleased to have it here.
     3) Blanco Tequila 100% de Agave from LUNAZUL ( On Special for $20.99 , 40% alc. by volume, ) is also brand new and very exciting for us with a great reduction here in price.
WINES Selected By Chris & Tony :
          WHITES : 4 -
     1) FETEASCA Regala, dry Romanian white ( $10.99 ) tasted this past weekend here by Mattof Suprex. Delightful, refreshing.
     2)  " Acrobat " 2008 Oregon Pinot Gris ( $13.49 ) is unbelievably refreshing and well balanced for this great price.
     3) " Katz, Gentile " soft dry white Alsace French white blend from KLUR ( $21.99 ) is unbelievably magnificent and a treat to drink with or without food.
     4) Dry Vidal Blanc 2008 ( $11.49 ) from New York's Finger Lakes region and made by STANDING STONE is a great outdoors white when you grill and serve some nicely-seasoned  warm-weather foods that may be casual or fancy. This dry white Vidal will stand up to lots of flavor in your meals.
          SPARKLING : 1 -
     1) M. LAWRENCE " Wet " Sparkling Wine sec/dry ( $22.49, 1350 of 2508 bottles, batch #5, 12%alc. by volume,, produced and bottled by L. MAWBY , Suttons Bay, MI ) is named after this quote that is on the bottle label : " Hooded copper eye, bolf fruited cologne, rich favoured flesh, not sweet, not dry - but wet she is ". I don't know about you but ....
          ROSES : Dry, 5 -
     1) " Vitiano " from FALESCO in Umbria ( On Sale for $9.99 ), 2008 is a blend of five grapes I believe that includes Cab and Merlot and Sangiovese and this bottle is showing fabulously now. It's a real treat : needs to open slowly like a red as it is often over-chilled.
     2) LA BASTIDE SAINT DOMINIQUE 2009 ( $10.99 ) from France's Vin De Pays De Mediterranee ( estate-bottled ) has got great color and great flavor extraction. Nice.
     3) 14-18h Greek Peleponnisos 2009 dry Agiorgitiko rose ($15.99 ) has a great deep, dark and intense color - almost like a light red, and it sure does taste great as it warms and opens in the glass : just like the Vitiano. Jody Jackman had both open this past Friday.
     4) Vieilles Vignes / Old Vines dry Bourgogne FRench Pinot Noir rose ( $21.99 ) from the DOMAINE DU CHATEAU DE CHOREY is a study in understatement and elegance and finesse, starting with the refined color and into the middle taste and the lingering , silky-smooth finish. It's a marvel of efficiency and subtlety ...
     5) CHATEAU  " Les Valentines " 2009 Cotes Du Provence ( $24.99 ) ( estate-bottled ) has just become a favorite of owner Florence at Lavandou restaurant down the block from us and already there have been requests by our customers to buy some. So voila ! it's here now and we are thrilled to have some. Only two cases as it's very limited in availability. Don't delay , come get some now before it is too late.

          REDS -  Dry, 9 -

     1) Cahors 2006 Malbec/Tannat dry French Red Blend , " Tradition " ( $13.49 ), from the CHATEAU DE GAUDOU is finally back in stock by popular demand. We had Justin taste this out the other day with you all and we sold-out and have been waiting patiently for more. It's finally here again and well-worth the wait.
     2) " Les Boudalles " red 2009 dry Rhone blendfrom the DOMAINE BRUSSET ( $13.99 ) literally blew me away the other day when I tasted it. I re-tasted it several times to be sure I really loved it and I did and so I can't wait to try it once again. It's so vibrant and lovely and charming and pleasing all-in-one to my famished/thirsty palate - a BIG YES to this one!
     3) St. Nicolas De Bougueil 2007 100% Cabernet Franc from FREDERIC MABILEAU ( $19.49 ) in the Loire Valley of France is classic, balanced and focused and flavorful Cabernet Franc at it's best and in this case perhaps most attractive form/outfit, too?
     4) " Pojo Del Ruspo " 2005 ( $15.99, great year ) Sangiovese/Sangiovetto Grosso grapes from BARBI in Umbria, Italy, is showing really well now, medium-to-light-bodied and such a great choice with many warm-weather meals. The owners have been here and it's always sold well for us. Great to still have the 2005 vintage here.
     5) STEELE " Old Vine Zin " 2007 from the Pacini Vineyard in Mendocino County has never been more seductive and pleasing as this 2007 : and it's only $17.99 a bottle. What a deal! Jeff was just here tasting it with you all : he's Jed Steele's right-hand man and has worked with him since 1985.
     6) " Bench Rock " 2004 dry red Washington State red blend from OKANOGAN ( $18.99 ) is medium-bodied, quite lean and a bit angular and spicy and best with food. We bought extra to get the Spice under $20 a bottle and Chris Barker really wanted to have some on hand to sell to you all. It will be great at a barbecue.
     7) 2007 ( great southern Rhone vintage in France ) Lirac from Eric Bonnet of the RESERVE SAINT DOMINIQUE estate( $19.99 ) is still very young and needing another 3-6 years of cellaring in my opinion. It's a shame to drink it now as it will clearly be so much better later. Drink this property's excellent Ventoux red 2009 ( $13.99 ) that I have already mentioned while you wait for this Lirac to mature gracefully.
     8) ARIZONA STRONGHOLD " Nachise " dry red blend of mostly Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Mourvedre from Cochise County, Arizona ( $28.49 ) is drinking beautifully once that it has an hour or more to open up and show it's mettle. Medium-bodied and balanced and quite a lot of lilting, breathing, moving nuances that will rock your cares away. It's worth the money. Try it on for size when you have a tasty meal next time with grilled white meats, game, and well-seasoned meals that includes peppers, too ... Great label as well.
     9) ARIZONA STRONGHOLD 2008 " Mangus " dry red 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Sangiovese/ 9% Merlot from vignerons/wine-makers Eric Glomski and Maynard Keenan in Arizona's Cochise County ( $28.49 ) was my personal favorite of the two ( as I believe it was also Chris Barker's ). I really liked the more tightly-knit flavors here and I am thrilled to have it as well as the " Nachise" Syrah-based red. These will be fun discoveries for many of you and I think that you will be delighted to have tried them just as we were. Cheers!
ALSO : WE JUST HAD ARRIVE the BECHMEN Estate 2008 Syrah, $27.49:  the BECKMEN Grenache dry Rose 2009, $22.49; the BECKMEN Le Bec Blanc 2008, $22.49 : as well as two new Spanish reds from Spain's Toledo/La Mancha region - the PINUAGA La Sendra Merlot/Tempranillo, $11.99 and the Nature Tempranillo 2007, $13.49 a bottle. Both owners have been by and tasted these with us over the last few weeks and it's great to finally get them here to our store. These are also amazing " new " additions/vintages to our store as we have already enjoyed selling the BECKMEN California wines from the Santa Ynez Valley. I really loved all of them : they are really excellent, focused, balanced and they never lose track of the grapes from which they started always keeping the spotlight on them and center stage! Nice!!!!

IT WAS A BUSY SATURDAY HERE, as well as a busy Friday.
IN FACT it was a bust week as we had nightly activities here all week long.
WE HOPE YOU are enjoying our weekly / nightly tastings as we try and share more of the wonderful spirits' flavors - savors that are out there and available now to all of us more than ever before.
IT IS AMAZING how much is now readily available at our fingertips : a whole mucho mas beaucoup grande lot of lotsa choices.
SO WE TRY and accomodate so many start-up enterprising individulas with products that deserve our recognition, and we provide a tasting platform for many of them : owners, winemakers, distillers, cider-makers, you name it!
CHECK IN THE STORE when you pass. We do not expect you to buy because you taste. We just want to give you the opportunity to taste and see what choices are out there that you might ennjoy at home? Buy it when and if you want, and when you need or can use it. No pressure. We are not here to pressure you.
WE WANT to be transparent in what we do here. We want to be an integral part of this community and do our part. Help us with your suggestions, help us stay true to our roots as a community but also ' hip and happenin' ', relevant, and active, productive, ... and an oasis away from home for many of you.
TELL US YOUR CONCERNS and we will do what we can to help. As I mentioned we are now supporting and taking donations for cervical cancer as well as Planned Parenthood. Any other causes near-and-dear-to-your-hearts that you would like us to focus on here this year? Please stop me, Tony, and tell me here anytime.
SO : We had our great 2nd BIG-THEME Beer-Tasting here last Thursday, and even considering that the heavens poured off-and-on all that day and some of the night we had a great crowd and turned many heads by tasting some exciting ' new beers ' from Canada and Michigan, as well as many old favoroites like HEAVY SEAS, ABITA, BROOKLYN and the cider BOLD ROCK. It is always great to make new discoveries and to taste the current flavors available from the houses you already know?
STAY-TUNED for our 3rd BIG THEME Beer Tasting , maybe even our 1st BIG THEME CIDER tasting?!? What do you think? Let me, Chris, Jagir and Santos know any of your thoughts?!> We need to hear from you.
LAST WEEK I EXPERIMENTED with the format of our weekly Tuesday store emails and will continue to do so as I am at a stage in my wonderful life that is blossoming so broadly and beautifully and I am overflowing with so much to share with you all, as it is all interconnected, and all valid, relevant, essential.
WITH THIS incredible warmth now we must also consider the full moon of the last two nights. Any craziness on your parts? Did you enjoy basking in the stage light of the full moon last night as I did? It was wonderful. There was a slight cooling breeze and I sipped both some fine ...
         WINES :
1) French Cremant D'Alsace from Domaine PFISTER, $37.49, bright, rich, round, delightful, great bubbles, so much sunshine to offer - so much moonlight, too, a real treat!
2) the Cremant D'Alsace Brut of HELEFRICH , On Special now for $24.99, even softer, rounder, more light and lulling and easy in this heat, yes!
3) The ' Luminescence ' brut methode traditionelle Loire Valley sparkling vin mousseux from the DOMAINE Des HERBAUGES , $19.99 , a drier, more tart and tangy Melon de Bourgogne, Chardonnay and Grolleau Gris blend here , more robust, gutsy, raw and sooooo ahhhlive ( I amde that word up ).
AND ...
with more herbed goat's cheese and StoneWheat crackers my wife, daughter and I also enjoyed some fine wines from South Africa that Ian and Melissa poured here from their own company RED WOLF Importers,
1) Mourvedre ( a French Rhone valley red grape variety that makes southern Cotes Du Rhone and Southwest French reds , as well as fine Spanish reds that they call by the name of Monastrell ), this delightful soft, bright silky expression of rose from South Africa's BABYLONSTOREN, $19.99 was a pure delight, too on Sunday night.
2) " Babel ' dry red 2015 Simonsberg, Paarl, South African mostly Mourvedre with some Bordeaux grapes, too, $21.99, was so smooth and bright having been opened like the rose already for two - three days! It had not lost anything, was even more soothing and blissful than when both Ian and Melissa poured it here last Friday night.
GRILLING LAST NIGHT was a treat as the weather was incredible, really special, so nice to be outside, the greening of trees and shrubs and everything ( sorry for the pollen! ), and no mosquitos anywhere to be seen ( the only surprise was my wife screaming later inside as we were getting ready to watch the classic old movie : " Nine To Five " : " there's a snake! ").
I RESCUED THE SNAKE and released it back into the wilds from where it came , a small snake, nothing to worry about.
ANYWAY : I was offering some Bulgarian red for us to try, from Andrew Stover pf the CHAMLIJA Paraskarasa dry red ( drank beautifully last night, really enjoyed it, so did my daughter and wife ), and I will ask Andrew about availability?
ON SATURDAY Andrew was here with Marin Atanasov , wine consultant of Fine European Wines / Brand Marketing OrganizationWorld Wines 2-6pm, and we tasted some of the ...
1) ORBELUS dry red " Hrumski ' ( Notions ) 2013, $19.99, a dry blend pf Syrah, Melnik 55, Mourvedre and Marselanwith 14% alcohol by volume. It is from the Thracian lowlands , it reminds me of a fine Austrian red with high acidity and some good body, firm, svelte, a fine food wine once chilled 40 minutes or so ... organic,
2) Pinot Noir by CHATEAU BURGOZONE from Bulgaria's northern border Cotes du Danube, $16.49, much lighter, some spice and acid to edge it , medium-to-light-bodies, a treat, a fun wine to chill , and with salmon or some appetizers, some lamb even, just a nice salad, ... another treat that we all enjoyed here on Saturday when both Marin and Andrew waxed poetic over it.
COME GET SOME of all of these, sooner than later, be proactive, ready, prepared, rewarded, rested, real and receptive : alliteration is the way to go for me these days.
HAPPY PASSOVER Today all, thanks for all your support and community.
I ENJOYED this past Friday when I went to Adas Synagogue and did a 4-kosher-wines wine-tasting for 60 or so young professionals there. I knew a handful, the others I got to meet and talk with through a wall of loud chatting all around us. It was fun, it was exciting, I had a microphone, and I blared both my heart and my soul into it as I cried to be heard! A great group, a party of six I saw later as I passed by Coppi's Organic restaurant here to pick up a pizza to take home to share with my wife and daughter : our dinner Saturday night : loved it.
SO : in the spirit of Passover when it is okay to get some and enjoy we still have some incredible bottles of 2010 CR CASTRA RUBRA, $35.49, ( produced with the help of French Bordeaux producer Michel Rolland ), this Bulgarian kosher for Passover dry red blend from the Thracian valley, ( 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc ), 14.5% alcohol by volume ... is a lovely medium-bodied yet robust, hearty mouthfulof food red, the food and the wine rounding each other out nicely! I had a saussage pizza at Coppi's on Friday night that would be amazing with this CASTRA RUBRA, really a great combo as the saussage was fiery and this would mellow that flavor and taste.
BEER & CIDER From Santos :
     1) " True Couple " Pear-Flavored Hard Apple Cider, craft-made, from the Standard Cider Company, from Washingtonville, NY, with 7% alcohol, $13.99 : a mouth-filling, fuller, more angular, tasty, accented - really nice with food!

     3) " Mango Surprise " IPA , Ale brewed with Mango, from ARCADIA ALES ARCADIA Brewing Company, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, ... a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, with 6.5% alcohol by volume, we tasted this to great success this past Thursday at our 2nd BIG THEME Beer-Tasting!

WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW is an old store email I wrote and posted way back to April 2011 when my dear friend Sidney Moore Margolis passed away floating off to the sounds of Red House a Jimi Hendrik's song played here by a local black musician that played it so passionately and made me feel for certain that his guitar and words were carrying well Sidney my friend!

IT WAS a busy Saturday herethis past week as I arrived and started to set up for my weekly wine class of six wines from 11:30AM-1PM at $10 a person. More and more of you are getting the word and coming by and signing up here to spend an hour and a half with me. it's fun. I always tie into what we are doing with what we have been doing here recently as I want it all to be " organic " and taking advantage of all that I / we can offer you now as you are in the store with us and may want to buy something for the weekend, too. So this past Saturday I started my day with some Greek reds ( MITRAVELAS Estate Nemea 2009, $12.49, and the ESMIOS Nemea 2005, $18.99 ) , some kosher Lazio unoaked Chardonnay GABRIELLE ( $9.99 ) and the both the kiwi ( New Zealand wine ) of FROMM Marlborough 2005 off-dry Riesling ( On Special for $14.99, reg: $25.99 ) and the LA STRADA 2004 Pinot Noir Marlborough ( On Special for $19.99, reg: $44.99 ).It was quite the tasting. All the wine showed well. Sotiris Bafitis had been in on Wednesday tasting an assortment of the Greek wines and there was a little bit left in the bottles some I showed the group that, in fact, the wines were still enjoyable on Saturday with food. I explained how the wines had changed and what the differences were and that's how we got the show rolling.
I LET A NUMBER OF OUR REGULAR CUSTOMERS try the wines that I was tasting with the class. I would spot them as they came into the store and pour them a glass and then take it over quickly to them to try as they shopped. I would say that if they had any questions to simply let me know and that either I or Greg would help them. It's called juggling more than one thing at a time and it's always fun and a challenge to do so.
THIS CLASS WAS SLOW TO GET OFF THE GROUND as people were a bit late showing up and all of a sudden the store filled with customers and it was necessary to help all of them as they were assorting questions and had lots of questions for us. I had not seen Wendy for quite some time as her t.v. schedule is quite busy and she had gone to buy some things at Pet Smart. Afterward she had walked into Weygandt's a couple of store fronts in that same block and was studying the Austrian wine section when her friend came by and told her that she needed to come over to Cleveland Park Wines And Spirits. She asked if Tony Quinn was still there? And the rest is history and we were off to a roaring start with the wines of Austria. Wendy said that the selection was pretty impressive over at Wygandt's and I showed her our selection of four shelves. What fun, what a lot of excitement with Sarah and Jacob looking for their wines, too and both Greg and me breaking away to help all this mad rush of customers this past Saturday.
ALL IN AGOOD DAY'S WORK. It was fun to sell some of all the SALE wines between the Dolcetto D'Alba 2005 PODERI COLLA ( On Special for $12.99, reg: $22.99 ), the Barolo 2002 CONERNO FANTINO ( On Special for $34.99, reg: $55.99 ), the ESMIOS Moscofilero dry Greek white ( On Special for $13.99, reg: $15.49 ), the Martinsborough Pinot Gris 2007 ESCARPMENT ( On Special for $22.99, reg: $34.99 ) and many, many more. Come check them out. Greg and I have had them all open here recently and they are all showing quite well. Most are fully mature or close and they have all been lowered in price and properly stored to save you both money and time to cellar them yourselves. You can take them home and pretty much feel quite confident to enjoy them now and not feel like you are robbing the cradle by enjoying them before their best times.
I JUST GOT A CALL from our customer Geoff that told me about this past week's experience with our wines M De MONLUC Gros Manseng ( indigenous grape variety from southern France ) that was the " hit " of his dinner when served with two French cheeses : 1) Latour a blend of equal parts of Goat.Sheep and Cow milk ( a soft cheese ), and with 2) Etochi a French semi-hard , like a Petit Basque Geoff told me. He said that the MONLUC had " great clean fruit, not as sweet as a German wine ). Thanks Geoff for sharing. The M De MONLUC sells for $15.99 a bottle and we are thrilled to have more for you to pick up here tomorrow. Glad that your guests liked it so much, too.
WE HAVE MANY KOSHER For PASSOVER Wines Here : many of the $10-$15 a bottle from Israel, Italy, France, Spain and more. Hopefully we have something for everyone. This past weekend Franceen Khang of Palm Bay Imports was here tasting the dry wines of the RECANATI winery and we still have many of those at $11 a bottle. More kosher wines is coming our way tomorrow.
WE ALSO HAVE SOME VINHO VERDE Portuguese dry white wines ( a slight sparkle and lower alcohols, 9-10% ) coming our way tomorrow along with some fancier " top-flight " Vinho Verdees made with only the Alvarinho grape ( three types, all at around $24 a bottle for the creme de la creme. These wines do have a higher level of alcohol at around 12%. TODAY we just received the ENCOSTAS DO LIMA Vinho Verde ( $9.99 ) with a 10% alcohol by volume level. It's so amazingly rich and flavorful and complex and yet so appealing with the warmer weather like yesterday's ( in the mid to high eighties ) and yet costing so very little.
AND SPEAKING OF WINES RECENTLY TASTED : Regis our rep just brought us tastes of the LEROY red( 1999 ) and white ( 2000 )  burgundies : BOTH WERE AMAZING! Really great. He also brought us tastes of the Italian wines we already have on our shelves :  1) " Myrto " dry white blend 2009 from FORADORI ( $27.99, a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, and the other 40% a blend of Incrocio Manzoni which is a cross between a Renano Riesling-related grape and Pinot Bianco. It just shouted and crooned and spelled and drew and told stories and sweet melodies of so much fruit-forward, well-balanced/ well-proportioned youth and promise, vigor and almost undisputed universal charm and spell and appeal! Wow is all I have to say.  2) " Il Frappato " made from the red Sicilian grape variety called Frappato and made by VALLE DELL'ACATE ( $19.99). This 2009 is medium-to-light-bodied, got great tomato-cherry-toasty berry and herb and a bit of curative apothecary flavors sure to keep on in balance and ready for just about anything good. It's charming and so much like a rocker rocking one, soothing one ... AND LAST :  3) the 2008 " Notturno Sangiovese from DREI DONNA ( $21.99 )from Romagna, Italy is charming and classic and medium-bodied and with just enough of everything to keep one pleased and guessing for what is still to come?!? It's a beauty to enjoy now - showing really well at this moment in time.
